Hi guys. Im looking at getting a second Beemer. A white e60 530i caught my eye. Thought it would go well with the 330i.

Anyways. There is a fault with the gearbox. Warning comes up on the screen to check transmission n doesn't pass 3rd gear sometimes. Before going further with this deal. Would it be cheap fix or look elsewere scenario?

196k on the clock.

Please assist

Take it to ZF in Germiston to diagnose and quote. They manufacture those boxes. Expect to pay around R20k for a full recon (excl computer box).

Thanks guys. 20k is not that bad to recon considering what I will be paying for the car. Do you know of anyone in Durban that can look at the car?

thats at least 20k..., but i think it is going to be more. You should also consider high mileage parts that would probably need to be done if not already.

Things like LCABs, shocks, suspension supports, engine mountings

oh i would also get all codes read as you want to ensure there arent any other gearbox codes....eg. torque convertor

Just a hint. Look to see if the tyres are all the same size, especially those on the same axle. Also, are they inflated the same as different size wheels could throw up gearbox errors.

I didnt mean that they will need to be replaced, i meant you need to have a look at them, if they have already been changed then you are in a better position. You can phone ZF to get a quote to overhaul...., worst case scenario.

Hi guys. Quick update. The megatron was the issue. 13k to sort. Is this reasonable? Also got them to send it for a suspension test as well. Will have info on that a bit later. If wasn't for u guys I would've been sitting with a headache

That sounds about right cost-wise to replace the mechatronics. Ask for the solenoids to be tested, if only one or two are faulty, you can buy them separately from ebay vendors in the US and repair rather than replace the entire mechatronics.

Or you could just knock R13k off the buying price?

I think in the end it all comes down to what the OP is going to be paying for the car, and also the year model and spec etc.

If its a launch era (2003/4) car for over, say, R120k then it's not worth it at all. If its an LCI for the same amount then its getting better.

Just my 5c worth...
