E53 X5 4.6IS MAJOR oil leak

Hi Guys,

We just noticed recently that the X5 is leaking oil badly on the right bank side, it looks as if the oil is coming out from the dip stick but I could be wrong, it's plashing everywhere in the right side of the engine bay (driver side), everything is covered in oil, but I am not sure what it could be, there are no lights coming on, I have replaced about 4 litter of oil in the last 2 weeks, oil was bought at dealership.

Any suggestions to what might cause this, or what broke?

Any suggestions / help would be highly appreciated.

My dad will take the engine covers off today to see if he can find the source of the problem, cause we fired the current mechanic

Also, do any of you know of mechanics on this forum? I do not trust other machs, will servicing all the BMW there.

:thumbdo: Maybe the fired Mechanic has sabotaged it :fencelook:

was there any work done recent to the Head - was the covers taken off ? maybe just a pinched casket !!!

Haha.

The only work done recently was via ZF, the replaced the gearbox, and not more than a week before that the mac was servicing it.

The weird thing thou, the mac flushed the engine and put the exact amount of oil into the engine, and when it was at ZF, they claimed the oil was low, so they refilled it, and when starting the car everything came bursting out from the dipstick, according to them it's because the dipstick is not for the X5, but I had it at BMW and according to them the dipstick is correct, and from that day the oil is leaking worst and worst.

Sump compression or PVC valve.

If its pushing out that much oil, there has to be pressure inside the crank case.

I see, how do i check sump compression, or is it the same as pvc valve? I replaced the same valve on the 330 the weekend, so will just buy one for the X tomorrow

Well cant hurt as a maintenance item to just replace the PVC.

It could be one of the head gaskets as well, but rule out PVC First.

If you pull out the dip-stick, listen for a sudden hiss and then gone sound. Same with the oil filler cap.

did you also check the hoses (breather pipes) running from the pcv valve - i believe the 4.6 is in essence the same as the 4.4 m62tub - i just had the pcv and all the hoses replaced. the pipes were so soft it actually tore as we took it off from the lcv.

also, check out the tappet cover gaskets - when these and/or the breather pipes are finished, it could appear that the head gaskets are leaking

a number of write-ups about this on the bimmerforum and also the range rover forums (2002-2005 range rovers used the m62tub 4.4 bmw v8 engine)
