Hi, as the heading suggests, I found a random wire under the rear seats of my E46 325Ci. I found it disconnected when I removed the rear seats to do the fuel pump etc. it’s behind the drivers seat (RH)

Is this wire important and what does it do? Car still works perfectly without it connected…

Allot have asked this question and many have different opinions

Some say its for optional rear heated seats
Some say it is used for when the cars are shipped

I honestly never worried about it

As mentioned above it is most likely a connection for an optional extra.
I have been stripping my boot area and found wires and connections that would have been for a CD shuttle and various other items. It is probably easier to build each car the same way and then just add the extra that is ordered instead of adding the the wiring as well.

Most US e46 are pre wired for all options so you can plug in the option and code it to work. Like my car didn’t come with the factory alarm so I got the extra bits from a salvage yard hooked it up and coded it.

That wire is for the ejection seat activation mechanism.
Seeing as the car was not supplied to MI6 for James Bond "007 licensed to kill" the mechanism was not fitted.
