E46 N42 Vacume Pump

Hi guys , My cars an E46 318i N42 engine Automatic

So I had my valve stem seals replaced this week , Got the car back yesterday , No more smoke , engine seems smoother and quieter , though they did find two oil leaks ,

They tell me that the Vacume pump is leaking , and the Sump gasket has a slight leak , But other then that there are no other leaks .

Regarding the vacuum pump , they tell me that the place where the hose attaches to the pump (metal pipe that goes into the pump ) at the top is loose , The seals are fine but that part is loose and that's whats causing my oil leak.

I haven't checked the car yet myself , takes time for me to strip up all the little bits .

Is this possible ? can that piece be loose and could it break? I assumed it was part of the Pumps body. Can it be tightened or is my only option a replacement pump?

I have replaced the seals on this pump a few years before , Didnt take notice though of the metal hose area. Seemed pretty solid to me.

The brakes are not hard or anything of that sort , they work fine at the moment . It just leaks .

All , any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So not knowing where to start , and no reply's to my post , I decided to go ahead and buy another vacume pump ,

I purchased a second hand one from a scrap yard , It seemed in good condition ,(new one was over R5000 , this was only about R200 , I was quoted R2500 from other yards , some wanted R1000 , others R1500 ) At that price it was worth a try, I also purchased new rings for it , And decided to rebuild this pump and attach it to the car.

In comparison to my original pump , the new ones (nozzle where the brake hose goes into ) did not spin , I also noticed that it has some sort of one way valve built into it . If you blow into it , it would allow air to go through but if you try and suck air through, it would stop.

Anyway , Rebuilt the pump, while cleaning it up as best I could with its new rubber seals and fitted it to the car , Will see in the morning how it turns out . Not a very complicated job , The bolts attaching this pump to the head were a little difficult getting to .

If anyone trys this , don't drop anything behind the engine!, Its can be annoyingly difficult to pick up screws bolts and screw drivers when they fall down and rest upon the sump guard.

What were the results of the rebuilt pump?

Im quite pleased with the results, car seems smoother , brakes feel much better and a lot more responsive( not as hard) even though I thought they were not hard,, idle has improved as well. And for some reason , it seems to have a little more power when accelerating . Not sure how that works.

That kit BMW sells is well worth the R100 cost. lol , much better then having to pay thousands for a new pump.

Good job, I have a mate with a similar engine and whilst I was doing his VCG for him, we had a look at replacing this seal. On the E90 it so tight against the firewall I eventually decided against doing it. Added to this he's also going to have to do his valve stem seals, so that would be the right time to this seal - well that's what I told myself !
