All that I'm struggling to find is a 5 speed manual for this build. I initially thought about a bellhousing adaption, but seemingly no one in Cape Town does this type of thing, I even called some guy in Booysens JHB but he wasn't keen on working on cars other than Found On Rubbish Dump

e34 530i m60b30, has a 5 speed manual that bolts straight up apparently. There are literally tons on gumtree being broken or going for like 12k.

Otherwise, e39 m5 six speed, or e34 540/6 e39 540/6 will work. Hens teeth though

Misinformation much?

Sorry, Just what I quoted from the link on Bimmerforums. Do they not work on the m62?

"Basically, any M60 or M62 or S62 trans will fit behind the M62 V-8, Nothing else will. There are some ratio differences but they all will bolt up. In line 6 trans and V-12 trans are not compatible!"

Yes they will fit on the M62......bolt pattern-wise.....but....and this is pretty big but....the M62 has a timing pickup on the rear of the motor (on the flywheel) whereas the M60 has a the pickup on the front of the motor (the vibration damper)....in essence the M62 needs a gearbox with a mounting point for the pickup so the gearbox has to be M/S62 specific. It does however work the other way round ie any of the V8 gearboxes (older generation ones, the bellhousing on motors like the S65 is completely different) will fit on the M60.

This also leads to other "frustrating" flywheel and clutch "issues"

I've read about lots of m62/s62 swaps, however, they kept the e46 subframe.

Our plan is to use the e39 v8 subframe and adapt it to the car (done properly, not just weld it on) the reason being that we would like the engine to be supported by the subframe and not adapt engine brackets onto the chassis turrets (which works, but we want to keep the engine on the subframe itself), the benefits being that I wont have to modify sump, steering rack, engine mountings etc (e39 v8's use a steering box).

We have no plans to FI this engine. I do have a standalone ECU (Spitronics advance with the extreme firing module). E46 M3 LSD & rear subframe are en-route.

It's been a while since I posted, 2014 was quite a busy year for us and I've been collecting parts to do this build properly. Special thanks to DieselFan and Splintether for their assistance!!! :praise:

So, the build is as follows (FINAL this time)

Engine:

M50tu block (bored to 86.4mm and decked)
S50B32 pistons
M54B30 crankshaft and con-rods
M54 sump, M50 oil pump and baffle plate mod with M52 oil pick-up
M52B28 head
M54 oil filter housing
New main and big end bearings, treated with a Liqui-Moly MOS2 coating (just for kicks)
Custom made metal head gasket from Redline Engineering
E36 M3 headers
E36 M3 throttle bodies & plenum (Not installing them yet, I need to think carefully about what kind of adapter plate I'll have to make)

Drivetrain:

5 speed Getrag from 528i E39
E46 M3 Subframe & M3 trailing arms
3.62 LSD M3 E46
1 x E36 M3 Driveshaft (still short one right side driveshaft)

Brakes:

E46 330i calipers front & rear with Ferodo DS2500 front pads

STILL REQUIRE:

Brake booster
Right side drive shaft
Propshaft (will have to measure when we have install the custom mount)
Custom made left engine mount
Exhaust system

Now that the motor is more or less in position, I gonna get the Spitronics running alongside the M43tu DME....

Will update again when it is complete!

Hi guys,

Gonna start updating a bit more frequently, after struggling a bit with the Spitronics system. Had to take it to MACE in Tokai initially as they were closer, to get the Spitronics firmware corrrected as it was programmed to drive a Lexus V8...

Took me a few Sundays to get it all wired correctly,(I'm running the Original DME to drive cooling, oil & water temps, installed an M54 thermostat, easy :), alternator) and the rest of the body stuff and removed all unnecessary engine loom wiring). Got it all sorted and still wouldn't start, she would try to fire but never started properly.

So I called MACE a few times to arrange an appointment to inspect the installation, I have yet to receive any feedback. After the 3rd day of waiting, I called Dynotech (the other CT Spitronics dealer in Brackenfell Industria) spoke to Izak and arranged an appointment for last week. Dynotech got it sorted for me the next day, the problem being that the incorrect MAP was installed on the Spitronics, the wiring was fine. I got it dropped off the flat-bed, tested and she started first time. Sounds rough (only headers, no cooling, just throttle) only idled it for 10 seconds dead, two small blips to check if the throttle was working, I couldn't help myself =) .

Kudos to the team at Dynotech, you will most definitely see my car for it's dynotune, even if I have to drive an extra 27 kms to Brackenfel, I will do it gladly for good service!!!

The rear suspension is sorted, Eibach springs and Bilstein B-4 for now.
Front has stock struts and springs for the moment, looking for a front set to match the rear profile. I think the Eiback springs were from an E36 M3 set, where I couldn't use the front springs, if I recall the drop was 25mm...

Still have to remove all 4 calipers again and clean them up, especially the rear calipers lol

Not as of yet, I have heard rumours of a way to tap into the DME, although I'm skeptical as it is a 6 cyl, and the original DME is a 4 pot.
But that is a minor for me atm, I can always install a new rev counter inside the cluster at some point...

Hi guys,

Things are going a bit slow at the moment, too much work and too little time...

However, I have procured all of the parts required to finish the build, bought a prop and brake master from Motorem this week, so will try to install it this weekend. My gearbox is actually a ZF 5 speed unit, not a Getrag as previously mentioned.

On another note, I have a set of S50 throttle bodies, I was wondering if any Fanatics have created an adapter plate to install the ITB's onto an m50/m52/m54 cylinder head, any info is most welcome :ty::ty:

Nice. Google a company by the name of extrudabody in the states they make adaptors for itbs and they have done a few bmws :coolShake:

FWIW it would be advisable that you work the head for the ITBs to work.

If you place them as "is" you will find that mid range will suffer although top end will be improved....by how much I am not sure but definitely not enough to justify the loss of mid range response

Indeed you are correct a1exander, just planning for the future, as I already have the throttle bodies and some mild cams, which I will install when the engine is "run in". I was actually looking for some sort of jig or drawn plans that may have been left over from somebody who had already performed this mod.

For now, the M50 intake manifold will do with the standard M52 cams. I would also need to search for a quality engineer in Cpt that would be willing to port & polish the head and install larger valves... But all in due time :coolShake:
