What does this solve? I'm interested as you all know I have Vanos problems... Found out last week the exhaust cam is not advancing so I am losing top end power big time...

Oooooh...this may just sort that out for you.
I did mine, ok different engine, but the VANOS works with oil pressure, and if these seals are worn the VANOS cant advance and retard as required...

Crash, I have done some research and it seems that the S54 vanos seals does not have serious issues as they put it together with the right material. Yet, as with anything the o'rings get flattened over time and the seals lose their precise fit which in turn does influence your performance a bit. It's not an exessive increase in power but as far as research goes it helps a bit with low down torque.
I just want to do it as my car has now reached its decade (10 years)
I'm on the hunt now to see who is gonna help me with this before i order.
As far as your exhaust cam goes i do know that there was a problem with the exhaust cam sprocket bolts losening.

new seals make sure the Vanos is not loosing internal pressure this allows the Vanos to adjust as it should bar any electrical faults...

the Rattle kit closes up clearance to stop Vanos rattle

I can also now do Vanos solenoid repairs if that is found to be your problem...

if you want some more detail click the links :)

Well my issue isn't really with the Vanos. Matt replaced the solenoids 2 years ago with new ones. I have the invoices. It was when G tech installed the Vanos, I have since discovered they have not got the correct tools to align the cams properly, so they did it by hand/eye. This is obviously what is causing the Vanos error code and why I am losing HP on top end.

Cant the dealer fix that?

They should have had a cam tool to keep the cams in place while changing the Vanos! If they didn't, then yes...gonna have to get the alignment right again.

Crash when they assembled your motor did they use the locking tool for the cams?

If not the exhaust cam is not set correctly in all likelyhood.

In addition the angle of the front sprockets requires a tool or at the least a tool pattern (piece of board with the sprockets drawn on it).

One can set without special tools but it then becomes a matter of patience and trial and error.

In doing the VANOS seals the cams are not disturbed

Hey A1ex, you are correct. No special Cam alignment tool was used. Its pretty clear that the exhaust cam is out of alignment. The error code we get on diagnostics says Exhaust Vanos Adaptation.

Anyway, just found a massive oil leak today, coming out from the black metal tube that exits the very top of the Vanos. Very annoyed with how this engine was put back together.

I've had this oil leak for a while now but it was small at firts and I couldn't source where it was from. Now its gotten much worse and tonight we found it....

Good luck sorting out your motor buddy.

Must be a big pain in the ass knowing your perfectly engineered S54 was not handled correctly.!:argh:

almost sure it has nothing to do with vanos itself but might be a oil problem
