E46 M3 Tyre Size

Hi Guys,

I am going to look at buying a set of tyres for my car that I can use on the hmmmm.....you know where...

I have the 19" rim but not sure of what size I should be looking at. I have read somewhere before where guys go from the standard 255/35/19 (think thats correct) to 265?

Any suggestions? I currently have a set of Conti's that I plan on keep for day-to-day and would like to find a cheaper tyre I can thrash a bit :=):

Thanks

265 rear
which wasnt too bad i think

Ya nice. would you keep the Continentals with about 85% tread depth on the car for road and abuse the Falkens or the other way around?

Chat to Imraam at Extreme Motorsport. He always comes up with great prices on tyres for me. They have just moved into new premises. PM me if you want his new number.

Hi Nick,

Sorry about the late reply. Thanks for the info. Tell me, what are the pro/cons of going up to a 275? What about the fronts?

It really comes down to personal preference and what you are trying to get out of the car. The wider the rear in relation to the fronts the more likely you are to induce understeer. The rears effectively retain grip more than the fronts to the front traction is lost first, causing understeer.

I light of this is have always kept the tyre size increases relative to each other, as much as possible. The other issue that you must take into account is maintaining the rolling diameter of your wheel package. if you choose a wheel rim combination that has a larger rolling diameter than the originals you can end up with changes the indicated speed etc.

I have just put on 20"s on my Z4 M coupe that has the same offsets as an e46 M3. By way of example i ended up with 245/30/20"s up front and 285/25/20"s on the rear (from 225/45/18"s - fronts and 255/40/18"s - rear).

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Nick

I have run Goodyears and Falkens on my e46 and I much prefer Falkens. They are a little noisier, but are a better performing tyre, have rim protectors build into the tyre and perform flawlessly. I have also never had tyre manufacture issues that I had with Goodyear on my Falkens. I have Falkens on all my ///M's and my GTR.

I am happy with their grip in the wet. I am not one to go hooning around the place when its slippery (okay maybe a little when theres some space and my finger bumps the Traction control button :nonono:), but i have never had that the thought "ooh that feels off". They have always just done exactly what it says on the tin :)
