E46 M3 pinging on load

Hi guys

My M3 has developed pinging on load. It is also running slightly hotter than normal.

At first I thought it was an exhaust rattle but it started getting louder over time. A scan did not reveal any problens.

There is no pinging when revving on standstill, only on load.

There's no pinging when I add an octane booster.

Anyone have the same problem or any ideas on where to start looking.?

Some (actually a lot) s54 engines ping continuously when under low revs and high load.
Always use octane booster and the pinging will cease.

There is nothing you can do about it in terms of mechanical work.

Disconnect the air sensor plug on the housing and see if it stops pinging.

Not at all an expert wrt to diagnosing issues but to me the pinging is due to the motor running too damn hot.
Now as to why its running hot;
1. Blown head gasket?
2. Failing water pump?

My E60 M5 pings which goes away when i use octane booster. If your car has had software done, maybe they've given it too much timing?

The cars naturally ping? As in you need to use an octane booster for it not to ping? Surely that isnt right?

Forgive my ignorance but what is 'pinging' in this context?

Simple explanation:

When the fuel explodes due to heat instead of spark.

Can't high compression also cause pinging? Not only heat?

correct.
pressure is directly proportional to temperature, hence high comp ratio increases temperature and boom goes the fuel...

Thanks for the feedback.

It's running 95 at the coast.

The car does have software from when I bought it. I never had this problem since I bought the car which was 50k KMS ago.

Will try disconnecting the air sensor and revert
