F8AW8Z said:Hi guys
Just a quick poll, should i buy E46 M3 or Golf 5 GTi?
Please vote fairly, take into consideration reliablity and stuff.
hanopp said:I love the E46 M3, maybe best car ever, but i voted for the Gti. Please take time and talk to some guys on the forum who has E46 M3's. My dear friend.. to maintain that beauty.. its a bugger. I mean special oil replacements of almost 2 grand, everything is 2 x the normal price, just go to a Bmw dealership and ask how much a clutch replacement would cost.. then you have your answer.. ok Gti, turbos can give problems but there are thousands out there with parts widely available,,,

I have owned both
G5GTi was K04 , M3 was stock.
M3 is the only thing that should be said in this sentence in terms of handling , power delivery , comfort , economy.
You wont regret the choice when going Mpower.

Fixing/ Maintaining a GTi aint that cheap either especially with its known faults like cam follower issues , DSG gearbox issues etc
wikk3d88 said:It's not that hard to find a GTI with a balance of service plan/motorplan, The DSG issues were only on the early models, same for the cam follower etc, all fixed on the late 07-08 specs upwards.
Like someone said earlier, if you have to ask, then take the GTI.

actually not,had a golf 5 tdi(i know not gti)111000km turbo blew, stood on side of road for nearly 3 hours,vw paid for the repairs and the bill came to R35000.
at 150000km service, the turbo was making a noise again, and within the 1 year gauranty time frame,vw told me its fine,it got worse, and thats why i decided to trade it in on a n/a car,and that was when i discovered bmw.
since then i just dont trust a turbo, and never will(wife drives a 2.5tdi navara, still waiting for this one to go).
im sorry but thats the way i feel about it,not trying to offend anybody who has a turbo car

ChrisBrand said:I say GTI. Just because i think for your age its safer. Not that im in a position to judge you or would know of your driving skills but i think take the GTI, which should have the same power as my 328i, which i even think is too powerful when i got it at the age of 21, and build your GTI up and get use to the power.
Then get a RWD M3.
prospect said:For daily driving, i.e. to and from work, the GTI wins. For all other uses the M3 wins hands down. I voted for the M3.

I've owned 4 cars with turbos (incl. a 330d) and have never had issues.
