Hi guys

Just a quick poll, should i buy E46 M3 or Golf 5 GTi?

Please vote fairly, take into consideration reliablity and stuff.

I have owned both

G5GTi was K04 , M3 was stock.

M3 is the only thing that should be said in this sentence in terms of handling , power delivery , comfort , economy.

You wont regret the choice when going Mpower.

I love the E46 M3, maybe best car ever, but i voted for the Gti. Please take time and talk to some guys on the forum who has E46 M3's. My dear friend.. to maintain that beauty.. its a bugger. I mean special oil replacements of almost 2 grand, everything is 2 x the normal price, just go to a Bmw dealership and ask how much a clutch replacement would cost.. then you have your answer.. ok Gti, turbos can give problems but there are thousands out there with parts widely available,,,

Fixing/ Maintaining a GTi aint that cheap either especially with its known faults like cam follower issues , DSG gearbox issues etc

It's not that hard to find a GTI with a balance of service plan/motorplan, The DSG issues were only on the early models, same for the cam follower etc, all fixed on the late 07-08 specs upwards.

Like someone said earlier, if you have to ask, then take the GTI.

///Maintenance is not for those who are budget conscious.

Cam follower issue on all TFSi's dude, even the later models. Only the TSi's (G6's) dont have the cam follower issue. Its even worse if you have a HPFP

I have the latest revision Cam etc on 08 Cupra but make sure I change the Cam Follower every 5000kms. You can see the wear on the follower even afetr 5000kms.

On a stock car the follower is good for 60k kms.

The GTI is the preferred choice .....

if you suffer from insomnia

The M3 will just give you sleepless nights. Yes maintenance is going to be pricier than a GTI. Then, you'll keep looking over your shoulder each time you park it, to admire that sleek body. You'll always crave a nice open stretch of road just to hear that glorious straight 6. Who needs that type of stress in their life - just buy the GTI and be happy with the same car every other chick in Sandton drives ...

actually not,had a golf 5 tdi(i know not gti)111000km turbo blew, stood on side of road for nearly 3 hours,vw paid for the repairs and the bill came to R35000.
at 150000km service, the turbo was making a noise again, and within the 1 year gauranty time frame,vw told me its fine,it got worse, and thats why i decided to trade it in on a n/a car,and that was when i discovered bmw.

since then i just dont trust a turbo, and never will(wife drives a 2.5tdi navara, still waiting for this one to go).
im sorry but thats the way i feel about it,not trying to offend anybody who has a turbo car

For daily driving, i.e. to and from work, the GTI wins. For all other uses the M3 wins hands down. I voted for the M3.

I've owned 4 cars with turbos (incl. a 330d) and have never had issues.

I say GTI. Just because i think for your age its safer. Not that im in a position to judge you or would know of your driving skills but i think take the GTI, which should have the same power as my 328i, which i even think is too powerful when i got it at the age of 21, and build your GTI up and get use to the power.

Then get a RWD M3.

Omw, some1 who speaks my language… I’m not old but also not 18 anymore. And younger guys always look at me funny when I tell them to mature with power/car and mentality.

well you are one of the lucky guys then,i know spy007 has had problems with his turbo and from other fanatics friends as well.

but please dont get me wrong,my wifes navara is turbo diesel and 161000 km on the clock, then again my sister in laws navara went at 100 000km,so all depends how its been looked after and driven.

personally i prefer petrol n/a motors over the turbo ones
