The E46 M3 is better then the E36 M3 in pretty much every way.
I prefer the looks of the e36, and the e36 is noticeably lighter, which give a much sharper and more precise feel. The e36 is probably a little cheaper to maintain too, but I dont think thats a major consideration of alot of the serious buyers out there.
But other then that the e46 is a superior car. It all boils down to nostalgia, alot of the people who used to own one, want one again. Its just that now they have become pretty rare in good condition. Im sure in 10 years time, people will be looking for e46 M3's in the same way.
