e46 M3 Engine rebuild

Bearings, headgasket and rod bolts got here yesterday. Rod bearings are useless. They going back to VAC, shiiiite packaging, so they got damaged in the post. I'll post some pornographic material of the most expensive 12 bolts I've ever bought in my life just now...

Ooh... Piston Porn...

Still need to get hold of a flywheel now, and a replacement rod and rob a bank or two then we're back in action... With luck it should be up and running before the end of may ;) The valvesprings, timing chain, headbolts and some other small stuff is at the dealership already, just need to go pick it up.

Those really do look the part, high comp i take it ?

JE 11.5:1 comp ratio.

The kicker is that they weigh 140g per piston less than the stock ones. These tip the scales at 330g, the stock ones are 470g each. Rev like a bike whooo hooo...

Just waiting for tip slip day so I can go get the valvesprings and stuff from BMW, and get the flywheel from Diesel electric, so we can get cracking on with it. I cant wait to hear this thing run again...

It would be good for cruising but bad for town driving.

There is a light flywheel available however I am advised that it was taken off as the car was needing many revs to pull of.

You gonna be using stock rods tho, yes?

Well that depends on what Glen finds on the rod department as we have a bent one that needs replacing.

Found a rod, it'll be with us before the end of the week!

I'm only off next week Monday only so I'll probably only pick it up then.

Going to pick up the new flywheel now.

Head has new valve springs fitted and valves cut.

Block has been prepared and is awaiting assembly

Oil pump still within spec.

What are the benefits of the cut valves?

Increase of CFM into the engine (A dry flow bench measures airflow in cubic feet per minute)... In simple terms, this means you can get more air into the engine by means of better air flow and/or air fuel mixture.

For a more detailed explanation, see below.

"Generally speaking, the more angles there are on the seats, the better the seat flows. A stock valve seat with only a single 45 degree angle cut on it will have a sharp edge just above and below the area where the valve sits on the seat. As the valve starts to open and air begins to flow past the valve, the abrupt change in angles create turbulence that reduces air velocity and flow.

This abrupt angle can also cause the air/fuel mixture to separate. So cutting another angle above the primary seat and a third angle below the seat helps smooth out the airflow. That’s why a traditional 30-45-60 degree three-angle valve job produces more power than a stock valve job. The extra angles help the air turn the corner so-to-speak, which reduces turbulence to improve air velocity and flow. It also lessens air/fuel separation to improve combustion, too."
