Howsit. I also have a e46 m3, however I'm new to the car and am not sure what a bad vanos sounds like. The car has a schnitzer exhaust, so its hard to hear what is normal. Can someone please post a sound or video clip of a noisy or rattling vanos? Or please let me know what I should look out for.

Vanos rattle normally happens at low RPM but even if you do not have rattle this will still give you no indication as to what condition the seals are in and its the seals that cause the performance loss...

Congrats on the car.

Vanos seals as fitted by the factory are good for roughly 20 000Kms.

If the car has more than that they are bad leading to a loss of roughly 40Nm in performance at under 5000rpm.

The rattle is a metallic noise which is evident at under 3000rpm typically.
If allowed to continue the spline shafts which move the cams will be damaged.

If you need further info send me a pm

Howsit bru, I sent you a pm, it hasn't gone through for some reason...

Thanks for the response. The car now has 98000km and the last service was done at bmw before I bought it at about 88000km. I think it was an inspection 1 service. Would the seals have been changed then as part of the service? Are you in the Jhb area to listen to the car and give further advice?

BMW never changes seals they only replace the full unit when they deem it is bad enough... performance is lost way before they decide it is bad enough

Axis Engine Works is in Sandton I will PM you with the details :)

I need to do this to my car. Where can I have it done? I'm in the Cape Town area.

Garage 808 but do speak to "moranor" as well.
