First try to re-sync the key remote with the EWS before you cut it open to replace the battery. You can buy the VL2020 battery from the abovementioned supplier or source it locally from these guys: http://za.rs-online.com/web/p/coin-button-rechargeable-batteries/0407877/

I spliced my key open and found of the contacts weren't making contact with the battery. Replaced the battery from RS components and had one of the Pakistani cell phone guys solder a new wire as the old contact broke.
And also my receiver wasn't wasn't working properly (CI receiver in the rear view mirror) but after unplugging and plugging the receiver back it, I re synced the key with the new battery and worked perfectly.
Be careful when opening the key, don't rush, do it slowly and use a sharp knife / razor blade.
I had a place in centurion cut a new key for me that I bought from ali express. And used an AK 90 Tool to re code the new key RDIF chip to the car EWS.
Now using the new key as still need to seal the old key back again.

Oh and on my brothers 330i I had to switch to position 2 five times quickly on and off
