There is a locksmith in Collert Drive not far from Lyndhurst Auto opposite the BP garage just off the M1 north close to Melrose Ach. I've never used him but a friend's mini cooper key set was sorted there for a grand

Battery replacement: R200
Batt replacement plus new casing incl cutting new blade R500
Totally new key incl cutting blade and coding to car R1000

I wouldn't be too worried.
On the downside, they operate from a house in a "previously disadvantaged" area.
On the upside, it always was a pretty upmarket area, the house is way way overcapitalised- obviously owned by the business owner and very extensively and expensively renovated. It's nicer than my house at the seaside.
He has 6 VW Caddy vans on the roads, carries extensive stock (I called him Saturday morning and he had an E46 key and a casing in stock) and takes credit cards with a proper wifi Speedpoint. Not exactly a fly by night operation.

If your cars insured im sure your insurance will replace it, They would probably repalace the door locks EWS and give you a new set of keys.

Stolen key is not a good thing . BMW might be able to get you a new cut key based on your cars VIN number (Stand to be corrected on this tough!)

I need a new key made as well , as my current spare key wont start the car , I was just told to bring some details and the cars VIN when im ready .... Didnt ask the cost at that time. But they did tell me that its done in germany.

On an E46 you can still easily get away with a 'no-keys' situation. Where you based bud?
