E46 Exterior Moulding

Hi guys

Anyone know where I can get the gloss black (shadowline) exterior trim that goes around the doors? Mine keeps coming lose around the back door (broken clips on the moulding itself) and it's scratching the paint off the body every time someone opens and closes the door. I've tried using sikaflex silicone which held it in place for a while, but it's come lose again. Agents quoted upwards of R4800 per side last time I checked:flyfun: and you can't get the clips seperatly:nonono:

It's part number 13 in the pic below.

Note the Gloss black trim is more than double the price of the chrome trim:yuck:

Haven't had much luck with the scrap yards in EL... Chrome ones are easier to come by than gloss black... I've just put it back in place with some more silicone. Hopefully it'll hold for a little while longer until I can source a replacement.

That might be an option if I can't get my hands on gloss black:thumbs: It's also quite difficult finding them with all the clips intact:yuck: For now the silicone seems to be holding though:=):

Can yo use quick-bond to put it in place?

I'm a bit reluctant to try that. It's a little too permanent for my liking and if for some reason I need to remove it or it doesn't hold, it could damage the paint and existing clips. At least with silicone it can be removed without damage.

I might actually have some of that stuff at home... Will give it a try if it comes lose again. Thanks:thumbs:

The clips are available from BMW, but expensive for such a small part, with age the plastic becomes brittle that is why they break. However, do not ask me how to get the broken ones out - looks like only BMW has the tool to do that ...

Are you talking about the clips on the moulding or the ones in the body? Last time I checked you could only get the ones that fit on the body... Can't remember what I paid but they were quite pricey for what they are. The ones on the body you can pull out with a set of pliers and some force. They fit in like rivets. The clips on the moulding that clip in by the back doors you can't get without replacing the entire moulding at around R4800 per side...

I'm curious now, can you post a photo of what exactly is broken and what the symptom is?

The 3 plastic clips behind this part of the moulding tend to get brittle over time and break. Because there is quite a bit of pressure between the door moulding and the door rubbers when opening and closing the door, it tends to schafe against the body scratching the paintwork. Once it's lose there tends to be a bit of difficulty opening and closing the door properly.

So the white clips in the body are fine?

Those also break but they can be replaced from the agents at a negligible cost. I think they're around R30-40 each if I remember correctly.

Smg quoted me R8 per clip assuming they are the correct things

It's possible to glue the trim piece. A panel Beater did that on mine when I last had them sprayed becuase of stone chips

They may very well be R8 per clip. I really can't remember what I paid for them... It could've been R30-40 for the lot that I bought.
