E46 ECU self learning?

Good day!

Made some minor modifications to my 2001 320i and was wondering if the ECU is self learning or if I need to get it re-tuned. My fuel comsumption after the de-cat and K&N filter installation seems to be heavier (and not cause my foot magicaly got heavier, I am being conservative :)) and when its cold it smells rich and when it warms up the idle is around 550-600rpm, lower than I recall it being.

Thanks!

the e46 has about a 5% adoption... you will be fine... but every engine is slightly different from the factory so a custom tune will still give you better results

How far have you driven so far? If I am not mistaken it takes about 200 or so km for it to properly adapt.

Look, changing what you have done does not change engine parameters enough to even merit adaptation. That is the beauty of the mass-flow system. I would guess that the problems you are experiencing are either from a busted MAF - courtesy of the K&N (and a long life), or lambda probes in the exhaust reaching the end of their life - possible also somewhat quicker for the same reasons. Of course, these problems could also have been caused by the installer having damaged something. I suggest you get a diagnostic done, and also look at the trim values once the car has warmed up, driving at steady speed.

Turns out my dipstick breather seal and some of the vacuum pipes behind the intake manifold were worn and sucking air. Had them replaced and now she feels amazing, crisp, smooth acceleration right through the RPM range.
Love the growl of the l6 :inlove: , pity natural aspiration has taken a back seat in the new models. Hey, got to move forward with the times.
