Hi Guys, I have a 2002 F/L 318 E46. Car just dies on me, and then the ASC and brake lights (orange) stays on when i try to start it again. After a while it will start, just to die on me again after couple of minutes. Someone said it is the crankshaft sensor. Does that sound about right?

Thanks

Yep,the one and only. Very common problem. You bringing back painful memories of getting stuck like that at 3 in the morning,haha. Get a good mechanic to replace it for you. It set me back about R2500 with labour. Stealers will rape you senseless.

@andrew: hahahahahahahahaha...this argument submerges again? :)

Also been told by Car Service City crank and cam sensor have to be replaced on 318ti (E46), haven't quoted me yet. Any realistic ballpark figure so I wont get ripped of.
Thanks

guys before you go and buy new components, get your codes read/diagnostic test done.

i purchased a cam sensor from goldwagon two years ago for R365, stealers wanted R1200.

I agree with Die_Miek. Get your codes/diagnostics read first. Had the same issue with the crankshaft sensor on my E46 318i . When the diagnostics where read it turned out not only was the crankshaft sensor poked but so was my steering angel sensor. Saved on more labour later! Good luck!
Ps.you won't believe what the dealerships will charge you for a pissy little sensor! Do your homework and shop around! :thumbs:
