E46 Clutch help Needed

Hi Fellow fanatics...

Can someone please shed some light on my misery....

I have a 2002 E46 320d with 289 000km on clock. Car extremely well looked after with FSH.... only have it 4 months.

one day in N1 traffic, I lost gears,, could not select or get neutral on the car. After some fiddling it just worked again..... and I made my way home. Car worked without a problem since...

One day (weeks after the above incident) went to garage, got out to get some stuff in shop... got back into car,, could not select a gear until today( 3 weeks later )

Then started the problem solving,, I have in the meantime changed the master cylinder, changed slave cylinder (x2 - first one's guts I popped out accidently ), bled the system (Clutch & brake) in any/all means possible but still cannot get any gear. I cannot understand this,, there was no reason for this to happen,, no noise, no smell, no hard gear selecting,, absolutely nothing !! I'm now pondering to sell my babe,, but don't want to...

please be so kind to share similar experiences...

Kind Greetings.

ET was here said:
sounds like the linkage between gear lever and the guts of the gearbox has either come loose or broken

Hi ET... Thanks for the reply..
To be honest, I do not know anymore.

Lots of the guys recons its Pressure Plate, but I cannot see how it will just drop away,, with no warning or no reason to believe so ...

What also confused me was when it happened the second time, I opened the existing slave cylinder, cleaned it up nicely and re-installed. after bleeding, it worked perfectly for 5 or so minutes and then did the same thing again.

What does concern me is that fact that if you (while idling) push the gear leaver hard towards first, there is slight movement of the car,, almost as if the clutch is not functioning..

a new clutch kit is R5 500 at Goldwagen,, which I don't have at this moment... hence me chasing every other possibility ... some guys also mentioned a bulging hose somewhere,, but I cannot see much as the hose just after the CDV goes into the body work and to the master cylinder....

to be honest,,, "ek is raadop"

Well my m3's clutch also failed prematurely and resulted in me being unable to select gears. It wasn't the hydraulic system, it was the pressure plate. Had to replace the clutch.

What happens if you put the car into gear while switched off then start with the clutch in? Does the car start moving despite the clutch being depressed?

Based on what your saying I would say the Centre boss on the clutch has sheared or the pressure plate has failed.. Either way it's a strip job..

Sent on the move from my S7edge

Release bearing maybe?

just 2 months ago I purchased the LUK clutch kit (pressure plate, clutch plate and release bearing) from Goldwagen Kempton Park for R2500 for my E46 325!
