Hi Guys, so this morning i get in my car start it let it idle , switch on the climate control demister and nothing happens :cursin:

The display works all the buttons work no air out the vents!!!!

Couldn't not see anything for a bit !!!!

So i did some quick research this morning and it looks like its my FSR unit according to this post: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292522

So my question is where can i get this unit other than at the dealerships i know its going to be rediculous price by them !!!

has anyone had a similar problem?

Cheers

Yeah that's the hedgehog resistor. Replace and you will be good to go. Butcher one from a scrapyard car and you might have another 5 years (or not) or you could let the agents rip you a new one...

in pretoria i know you can get them from bemows, they go for about R800-00 iirc.. in capetown i have no idea where to get them, sorry..

this is a very common failure on the E46 btw.. almost as common as the electric windows failing!!

Before you replace the resistor make sure its not a loose contact. Had the same problem with mine recently and that was the problem.

Also, scan Gumtree. There's a few guys selling them ranging from R400 to R600. Can't vouch for the quality, but at that price, you can't complain either ...

So i decided after work to take this unit out.

What a Pain in the @$$ if you planning on doing this DIY use this write up its for RHD cars :
http://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=794644

After alot of swearing and coming close to giving up I eventually got the hidden screw out

Gave the FSR a good scrub with hot water just to give it a bit of a shine again dried it with a hair dryer and put it back in for the hell of it.

Did not work at first then wiggled the cables around and boom back in action

but im just going to see how long it lasts will eventually buy a new unit if this stops working.

Thanks Sabre for the advice!!

Hi guys. I'm also having what I'm thinking is the FSU acting up. I've replaced it with a new one from Bruce Craig's Parts (Maitland, Cape Town) but it is even worse now. See a short video clip here:

Any thoughts on what's wrong, could it still be the FSU?

Thanks

Fitted another new one and seems like the problem is resolved. I hope.

I changed mine on my (ex) E46 330i auto. When doing the work, I was just contemplating how difficult a job it would have been if a clutch pedal was in the way. Automatic FTW :tease:

It was a while since I did this, but IIRC it's a screw that you have to remove by "feel" as you can't really see it.

Thanx for the heads up... seems I'm gonna have to swop the box for an auto before attempting this one... :biglol:
