E46 Carputer project

So I started the bezel, and its taking longer than I expected it would. I have started the front, that's the most important part, because it will be the only visible side.

I just finished applying the second layer of BF, so in about 2hours that should be hard (taking into account that its very cold and raning)

I also thought of putting it in the oven at 45c, but to afraid I will skrew up the radio or climate control.. Once the front is cured, I will apply some more inside to make a little bit stronger.

I am just wondering if this only consists of filler, will it be strong enought?

So added another layer of filler about 10min ago, here it is still wet:

In about 2hours time i will start sanding it, time to get the trust tremmel as well from the boxes. Will also be doing a ashtray mod for the usbs and card reader.

Yeah some people just dont get it!! carpc in the boot...
I initially wanted to do this project for my Astra a few yrs ago before i got the E46. I have everything for it boxed in my garage. I also have the usb slot drive and the plan was to have it overhead near the sunroof button. I just had the software side setup then i canned it, work and time being the main factor. I bought me the Dynavin instead. I was also think of maybe starting it up again with the E30 as i have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on all the goodies.
Really impressed with your work. Sure it will come out tops!!

Thanks guys..

Yeah start the project again, its gr8 fun.

So here is another pic
eheny6er.jpg

You will notice that i added another bit of BF in the lower middle, it was a bit uneven there, since this photo i have sanded it again, will be cutting off some more of the sides tonight to get it more even, when everything is straight, i will then properly sand it to get it 100% even, then paint it.

Thus far this has only cost me under R60, compared to the R1500 it would cost me to import again.

I will be cutting the centre for the screen tonight or tomorrow, just want it to fit properly in the dash first before cutting it, and need to get it looking nice first.

I will also start the ashtray mod tonight or tomorrow, depending on the time i will have. Just need to find some plastic dip as well, just not sure where.

So i am scrapping that bezel, it looks to crppy..

I started on a new one now, i split the screen in 2 so that i can use the front piece to properly position it while molding

I am using a completely different approach, will also mount the pc tonight or tomorrow along with the psu

Pic of the bezel i will not continue with

So here are 3 pics, this method is WAAY more effective, much faster turn around.

As you can see from this pic, I used some tape to cover the interior, I used this tape because the BF easily gets loose from it, this was the very first putty I applied
qe5aryju.jpg

This was the 3rd layer, it started to take shape, you will notice I applied BF to thick on the right side.
ahupage7.jpg

This is when I removed it from the dash, and after the first tremmel session, made the right side very flat so that I can apply better putty more compressed, I want to go for a diamondish look for the sides, similar to the top and bottom. If everything goes well I will take it in for the spray job the weekend and fit

Will post more pics later

Another update:

Another sanding session with the tremmel today yielded the below results, but still alot to be done. Will post more pics for this later
hu8ese2e.jpg

After I removed the covers in the boot on the left side, and removed the tray for the shuttle
rebu4yza.jpg

The computer in its future position, the position is perfect, out of sight, and a air vent from outside
betegape.jpg

The cover fitted again to see if the computer fits properly, and it does :)
ydararum.jpg

So the idea is to fit the special PSU in the inside of the casing, where it should be, but unfortunately it comes without a casing covering it, so had to think of something, luckily the casing has long vents at the back the same length of the PSU, so got into my bag of screws and spacers for pc's, and also got an old anti static bag and also with the foam under motherboards
6umudery.jpg

So here is the PSU with the protection, the reason for this is because the PSU only have 2 places for screws, and was afraid that if I go over a hump that it will wiggle and short out against casing, so now, if that happens it will touch the anti static/foam bag.
3azedaju.jpg

Here it is fitted in the casing, on the left.
