I get 700 off a tank quite easily, but my driving is mostly highway cruising between 100-130 depending on my mood. I average between 7.5-9l/100km on the highway and between 10-13 in town driving normally. Rarely do I see 14 and above unless I really push it with lots of stop start driving. Long distance I think 800-850 off a tank is quite achievable. When I drove from jhb to el I had a tank range of 900 averaging 6.5-7.5l/100km. It really depends on how you drive the car and how well you maintain it.

I agree, my car gets really good milage on the highway. Better than my e90 320i I had. My guess is the engin does not have to work as hard to maintain highway speeds. But that is just my twisted logic speaking...

I have a 2002 330i steptronic, very mixed driving, often heavy Pta - JHB traffic, urban its on 11.5/6/7 most the time. On the run to natal coast it drops to around 7.4/5/6/7 at the 120 mark, does get ever so slightly better around 130kmh but when getting to 140 area goes back up to the 7.7 area. Thinks its to do with the torque curve at 130 - does not drop off speed on hills like at 120. Also, car is looooonnnngggg overdue for service and still has original cats at 250000km's so with that in mind it would no doubt improve slightly as well.

with my normal driving & when i say normal i mean not pussy footing around it is not very economical to put it lightly...i love the car so i am willing to pay the ridiculous fuel bill every month...well for a while at least

I have the E46 330i Steptronic.

City driving never under 11. Heavy traffic 13 is average and even 15 not impossible.

Dont expect the car to get under 10 easily in urban cycles even if its a manual.

I drive 330i 2004 6 speed and my average urburn driving has been 9.7 to 11 . am yet to go on the open stretch. What I have noticed though is that if I travel at ave 140 that's when I get 9.7!!!!

330i optimum fuel saving is done at 120 - 130 max

I have the E90 330i and just drive in the city. Car is on 14.2L/100km now. On the rare occasions I go on the highway I reset the figures and then it's around 9.8-10. I always drive with cruse control on and never faster than 120-125km/h. Not sure what the difference is between the e46 and e90 on consumption.

Hope it help

Having had E46 manual and auto, the manual is slightly better, auto transmission often seems to be in wrong gear and down changes 2 gears when one would be sufficient. My E46 auto currently averages around 11.5l/100km and that's very mixed urban driving. If I take it to the coast it drops and from PTA East to Southbroom its around 740km I have made it cruising at the speed limits and speed control sections (painful!!). but then its completely running on fumes. The average on those runs is actually very good for technology that old, computer recons 7.1l/100km but they can be a little out. The manual used to drop to the 6.8l/100 reading and in mixed congested hiway driving it was averaging around 10.3L/100. I also had an E90 330i auto which was horrendous in comparison mixed driving in same circumstances it was averaging 14 - 15L/100!! My E39 M5 was the same as that in the same conditions!
If you are a frugal driver with the 6spd you should attain 500km + on a tank at the 80 - 100km/h mark as you describe.

Also agree with AcidBurns comment above, my 2c worth, the car actually gives better consumption around 130 than 120 in my view, momentum is kept better and less pedal pressure required on hills
