I also bought upholders like that from ebay  did you buy the extended one that goes all the way back or does it stop after the 2nd cup holder?

it stops, but i had the old key holder tray that i cut perfectly to fit it in the space. :) so have cup holders and a place to drop my keys or small junk :) did not want the coin holder thing.

Looks decent

Does the E46 not come with cupholders at all, or was it an optional extra?

yeah prity much you get two versions 3 compartments or one that slides closed like that with a pen holder. but you have to replace the whole unit at the 1st compartment does not come out i cut that in half as a i had a spare and made the last bit to fit with the cup holders

That's not a bad price for decent cup holders

The E46 cupholders do look alot more sturdy than those that we have in the E39

Yes. The E39 has the most useless cup holders ever thought of, and the tiny unit costs around R800.00 on eBay to replace, never mind the dealers price.

I use mine. Just make sure you don't get McD's supersize and try squeeze it in there :fencelook:

I see my rear cupholders were replaced by the previous owner. Now it's just a dust-collecting compartment.

Mine doesnt actually have rear cupholders which is just fine, one less thing for any passengers in the rear to screw up :fencelook:
