E46 A/T Gearbox Question

Evening guys

My car's gearbox recently started "slipping"

Sometimes in 2nd gear when I accelerate harder than normal, it has like a quick slip and in 4th gear it feels like the clutch slips where it picks up revs and suddenly drops. This happens regularly and has gotten worse over the last month or so.

Also when I drive from about 30kph to just over 40kph there's a rough, grinding type of sound.

Any advice will be appreciated.

My honest opinion is that the gearbox is about to fail. I would suggest not driving the car and getting it to someone that can check it properly.

Don't even bother going to bmw, when my autobox on my E46 failed I sent it to bmw and they quoted me 84k....

I ended up doing a manual conversion which I don't recommend due to resale problems that will arise later on when you want to sell the car. It is generally the cheaper option though so if you are planning on keeping the car and don't mind being VERY patient when you want to sell the car then go for the manual conversion.

If not then either source a reconditioned autobox or ask on the forum for a place that can repair it. Repairs range but from what I have heard your looking at around 25k to repair it. BMW will not repair it they will only replace it which is why they ask around 84k.

Speak to Gizmo, he may be able to source a second hand box for you and if you want to do the auto to manual conversion he can do that too.
