Wsup fellas,

Looking to do the brakes on my 328 month-end and I want to upgrade to E46 330i brakes as apparently they are a straight fit even though they are bigger (17" rims are a pre-requisite though). I would also have to get the bigger calipers as well. I explained this to the local stealers who looked at me incredulously and said I should come back with a VIN for a 330i. So do any of you kind folks want to help a brada out ? Any other items to get while I'm at it?

Thanks in advance

Never tell the dealers what you want to do, they are pretty dumb, you should have seen the looks I got when I ordered a shift lever for a Z4M, had pretty much the entire parts department huddled around a PC. What you do is go on realOEM or BMWfans and just get the part numbers, then go to BMW and as them to order said part numbers, just make sure that the part number corresponds to the same item on there system that you think it should.

Personally I would try and source the brakes second hand - the callipers at least cause then you can get everything at once, getting the stuff from the dealers will be pricey I think. For the pads and discs you should get new ones of course.

You're right Sank it will be expensive, but being so far away from decent 2nd sources means that any savings to be had from going the 2nd hand route get evapourated in cost of travel, so many times it works out at the same cost unfortunately. But I'll decide after they quote me the items.

I'm afraid of going onto realeom an then managing to somehow pick an incorrect part/part no. :fencelook: The stealers DO NOT like to take back parts for which YOU supplied the part numbers! That's why I figure if I have a VIN chances of a cock-up are zero (almost!), and they'll be to blame for any errors...

That is why I am saying check what each part number is on their system is as well, so that you know it is what you expect it to be. Also from my experience you can't take bits back to BMW, period. They once supplied me with wrong part when I supplied all the info they wanted correctly, when I went to take it back they just said, sorry not our problem.

If I do a quick online price check at the dealer the brakes would probably cost you something like:
Calliper housing left: R3300
Calliper housing right: R3300
Calliper carrier : R1890

Anti-rattle clip: R90 x 2

thats alot of money to spend on upgrading the brakes.

how much of an improvement would these make over the 328i brakes.

...yup,that...is...expensive...!Might have to go the second hand route, hopefully Gizmo can sort me out.

XMAX@ Considering the price that's a great question, but if you can pick up those calipers 2nd for a good price then I think it's good upgrade.Besides isn't R5k on brakes money better spent than R5k on an aftermarket exhaust?

Stealers just quoted me;

FRONT
discs R2500/per
pads R1860/set
calipers R2000/ea

REAR
discs R1025/per
pads R800/set
calipers R2000/ea

This works out at R17,710 :biglol: NOT HAPPENING...almost half of that cost is the calipers...

It would be nice to hear from guys who done this upgrade though...

bmw put proper brakes on the car to start with... just get oem or some good pads and disks... steel braided lines and good fluid would be worth doing...

putting huge brakes on will just add more weight so exhaust would be better to do :)

If you boost the car then you need to look at brakes

Yuvan@ They smoke a special blend of athlete's foot, earwax, and dried up caked sweat...!

Moranor@ Nothing wrong with more stopping power just NOT at that price
Everytime I want to do the exhaust, something else comes up, so you can imagine that boost is a fantasy :fencelook:

tires do the stopping so you wont stop any quicker with the same tires because the brakes you have now are quite capable of locking up the wheels :) if you dont get brake fade now from overheating you dont need bigger brakes

Steel braided lines?????

Calypso@ I don't know...Gizmo had a set of 330 brakes for sale some months back and had stated that it's a straight swap for E36/E46 320/323/325/328.I specifically asked him if no other parts are needed and he mentioned the calipers and that I had to have at least 17s.

I've got a decent set of 330i pads if you want (with the sensor). Item 2 in the list below:

Sale Link

Make me a decent offer if you're interested.

steel braided brake lines give you a better feel because they dont flex even when they hot... but having felt how stiff the lines are on my car im not sure they can be that much better than oem

WoW.... R2500 per disc for an E46 330i and here I was complaining when I paid under R2500 for both front discs, front pads and both RTAB's from the stealers :fishwack:

Moranor@ Ok Moranor you win !Besides the standard discs/pads front AND rear cost R4k for the lot...that's quite a difference! So maybe the exhaust is on again
Out of interest are you saying I'd have to get a different brand of tyres or wider tyres (or both)?
Oh by the way where does one get steel braided brake lines from?Price?

Doomsdaya@ I personally think most E36 parts prices aren't bad especially when viewed against the newer E46 and E39 cars, for the more common parts anyway.

MSM@ Eish I've just been talked out of the brake upgrade, thanks for the offer though
Oh you're black 330i is sick though :praise:

Calypso@ Yeah I think Leonard said the front discs on his M5 cost R2.5k...
