thread revival... :biglol:

getting between 13.5-15l/100KM , which seems well above normal ?

Mornings is bumper-bumper traffic on the school run and into work , total trip about 15km, no highways

and in other news....pfffff , 330i - WHAT A FCUKIN CAR! cant imagine that i would sell this one.

Did your car not go to the renowned BMW expert? Did this expert not check the car out before you purchased it?

Your consumption is sky-high for an E46 330i:blueCry:

Keep in mind @Tjoppies has an automatic, its going to be a guzzler.
On my 5 speed manual I average 9.8 l/100km in urban traffic. When I drove it down from DBN to CPT it did an easy 7l/100km without cruise control and some really amazing overtakings.

Shouldn't be heavier than an E46 325 Touring Auto.

Cos the one Gizmo was trying to sell me was much lighter than @Tjoppies consumption.

I have owned a E39 525i and 530i, both Auto's that were well maintained and they were not guzzlers

Have a 5 speed manual 330i and my average is currently on 9.5l/100km with quite a bit of spirited driving and traffic mixed in.

My 335i auto is currently on 11.5l/100km, with similar driving between both cars. That consumption on your e46 does seem rather high.

On very short trips like 10km and below in town driving the auto is getting about 14.5l p/100km which isn't great but, on the highway at 120km/h with cruise control the OBC reads 7.5l p/100km. Only problem is that its so difficult to drive at 120km/h, the sounds and power is a bit addictive.

From post #7 in this very thread...

Bro if you were ill advised and if there is something majorly wrong, you should take the car back to the dealer.

You have rights as the consumer and there could have been latent defects not disclosed.

Easy test, reset the consumption meter and do a test on the highway out of peak traffic, see what consumption is like. Should easily drop down to 7-8l/100km.

I apologize for reviving this old thread but im also considering a e46 330i in the near future :fencelook:

I wanted to know is there anyone who owned/drove both the face lift and pre-face lift 330i but in manual.

Cosmetically the face lift is better but performance wise ? I read the 5 speed box of the pre face lift was much quicker then the 6 speed

And is there a big difference in fuel consumption with mixed driving ?

These are really good cars! Any straight 6 cylinder e46 is a good buy! The 330i is the cream of the crop! Fuel consumption on urban roads is high at around 13L to 14L/100kms, but on the freeway, you can average around 8.5L to 9L/100kms. Its also the last 3 series to have a spare wheel and you don't need to spend extra cash on run-flats. Another thing to consider is that these double vanos 3 litre straight six engines were naturally aspirated, so no need to replace turbos. Either manual or auto is great, just check if you need to replace the prop shaft on the manual. They usually develop a bit of play after 180000kms.

These are very good cars. I know of a Sea Green 1999 320i E46 doing above 800000kms. Its only recently gone in for engine repairs.

Common things that usually need replacing are:
  • Prop Shaft Universal Joints
  • Window Regulators
  • Water Expansion Tank
  • Water Pump
  • Radiator
  • Thermostat Housing
  • Aircon Compressor
  • Final Stage Resistor of Hedgehog
  • Windscreen Water Reservoir Pump
  • Tappet Cover Gasket
  • Temperature Sensor O-Ring
  • Lower Control Arm Bushes
  • Trail Arm Bushes
  • Wheel Bearings
  • Shocks
  • Oil Catch Nut

These are just some of things I had to replace on my E46.

In my opinion, if the mileage is lower than 200000kms its worth getting, but just make sure you got a little cash to replace a few things here and there.

The e46 330i makes a great family car as well as the weekend toy! There's nothing like that 3 litre straight six tone.

The best I got in my 04' 330i on the highway was 6.4L/100km going 120km/h cruise control and 7.1L/100km doing 140km/h.
Urban areas, I get around 11-12L/100km.

Awesome machines.

@Tjoppies getting back to this out of interest sake.

Have a 2002 330i manual, where the consumption was 9.2L/100KM when I was driving it on the highway each day. Wife is now driving it, with no highway, only shops and back, and it now sits on 13.5L/100KM consumption. That is, without resetting it from when it was on 9.2!

So, I say, your consumption seems normal for the type of driving you describe in your post. The 6 cylinder non-turbo engines are thirsty in town driving, but very good once on the open highway.
