I don't have the diesel version but I had the E46, 330i one.

Had a wild vibration when I accelerated and slowed down, there was this sort off vibration and rumbling noise from under the car, felt like the floor was vibrating every time you touch the gas pedal or let go.

Long story short, I went to propshaft in Pretoria west across pilditch and they screamed at me for driving the car like that, first though wtf and then it came to light that the center bearing on the propshaft was shot. Bought the propshaft from bemow scrapyard as the bearing at the end of the shaft isn't sold separately and bmw was asking my arm for one new propshaft, like R10000 + for it. I bought the guilbo, center bearing and a 2nd hand prop shaft, they fitted it for me for like R1500 and she was as new, sold her like that. I also had a clunk noise when slowing down or letting of the gas.

Anyway, hope this helps. Bearing and guilbo was together R3000 and then the 2nd hand propshaft due to that bearing at the end of the shaft, R2000 at bemow in Pretoria west, and R1500 for the install.

Yeah that sounds like a center bearing from my experience.

You can visually inspect it by getting under the car. Right in the middle of the prop you will see the bearing, try to move the prop up and down and check the bearing.

My 318E46 and X5 had this issue. The worse the bearing gets the more noise there is on acceleration.

There is also an issue where they let you send the propshaft for re-balancing, but I marked the props before removal and inserted them the same again.

Best to replace the center bearing and prop-shaft coupling at the same time , Make sure that before they remove the propshaft, they mark both pieces so its fitted back in correctly , I read and was told by a proshaft shop that these things are hard to balance. Otherwise it will vibrate again even with the new parts. While you are under there might as well replace the Transmission mounts as well , they were so cheap from Goldwagen for the Mayle part . and its an easy change .

I've been through this ordeal and I can almost guarantee that you need not do anything else other than changing the centre bearing.

DO NOT remove or replace the propshaft or dare have it re balanced. It will never be the same again if you do.

Hi Guys had the same issue on my 330i, which has 376 thousand kilometers, replaced the CSB x2 in a space of 2 weeks and the problem persisted.
Finally took the car to Propshaft Engineers in Booysens where I was greeted by Johan Botha, the owner.
Johan removed the propshaft, cut off the U-joint connectors and replaced them with new ones re balanced the propshaft and installed with new CSB and Donut,
Car is running like a dream once again.
asked if this can be avoided, and Johan said that this unfortunately cannot be avoided and this work will need to be done to the propshaft at some point in the cars life as it gets older.
would recommend Propshaft Engineers to anyone requiring these services in Johannesburg
