I did a fair amount of driving this weekend. and I was pushing the car in short bits.

I was thinking to myself " I am gonna miss the sound of the BMW I6 Petrol ". But then I thought, " ahh, what the heck" the diesels arent bad at all anyways.

I filled up my car this morning. From full to the orange light just coming on was 500km. Sure thats not great, but what a cool 500km.

I know that in my 330D (coming sometime this week, depending on how much more work Tunetech has to do on it) will get much better economy, and a bit more power, but I sure am gonna miss my 325i.

I dunno if this contributed to the topic. but.... meh...

First post here, very interesting thread, some heated debates but i think it comes down to personal preference.

Ive owned both deisel and petrol in the past and over the years deisel has improved exceptionally. The aplications for the deisel motor are growing as well as the aftermarket technology to "improve" it.

That said you can do a decat with full exhaust, bearing in mind however that its not gona have that music of say 325 freeflow but it will sound more pleasant to the ears and give u that harmonic feeling as you plant it...

Nothing wrong with deisel at all, better known as the thinking mans car, big torque and exceptional milage, what more can you ask for in an everyday vehicle...

lol awesome :)

but a free flow with no filters on it will smoke like hell... unless i got something wrong...

a diesel smoking has nothing to do with its exhaust system, e46 diesels did not even have particulate filters installed. excess unburnt diesel causes the black smoke, thus remapped cars tend to smoke more than stock..

surely under load there will be unburnt fuel no matter how its tuned?

the reason why I wanted to get some exhaust note was.... wait for it....... my gf had a 120i convertible and recently upgraded to hmmm the E92 M3 manual WTF!!!! carbon fibre roof and red interior.... so if i can just get a nice exhaust tone I am all good with the situation.

oh btw i dont mind the diesel engine noise I can live with that! but i love a nice exhaust tone aswell

:dropjaw: just give up... just give up... least she has awesome taste in cars :)

sure there will, but the point being that a freeflow exhaust wont contribute to smoking, unless the car had particlulate filters in the first place that got replaced with a freeflow.. the E46 series never had particulate filters..

I just went for a drive. I quite like how my 6cyl diesel sounds from inside the cabin, especially when you give it stick. Just this angry growl and then all the other cars look like they are looking for parking. Who cares what it sounds like from outside?

you all just wait.

When i get my 330D im gonna put in 3 turbos. Yes ladies and gentlemen, a TRI Turbo. one for every two cylinders.

then im gonna put in one of those under the car boom boxes (saw one on pimp my ride a few years ago, where the sound can mimic any engine note) and make it sound like a Ferrari Enzo that just spat out a General Electric C6 Turbofan.

Then im gonna put in a multilink suspension and a LSD.

all this will lead to me being the fastest 330D in vorna valley, midrand. Killing quarter miles in under 18 seconds.

sorry for the utter kak above. Im tired of this battle. Diesel vs Petrol.....

Top Gear: Season 4, Episode 8. JC, "Its a Sad day, because it seems that Diesel has finally caught up to petrol."

The End.

so a ridiculous amount of smoke is just down to bad tuning then...
maybe one day ill get a diesel but for now im very happy with petrol :)

OEM diesels are usually tuned to run 20% lean in order to not make smoke trails, so a modern diesel should not smoke unless the turbo or rings are shot, or it is tuned by somebody who thinks he knows how...

On start-up, and when giving it stick above 4000rpm, I do get a puff of whispy grey smoke. But with 280Nm and 15km/L, I think I can live with it.

Loved my diesel. Had some work done on it. Made good power, and sounded very good. Had many people complimented the sound of the car. No one could believe that it was a diesel engine running. For all engine mounts your going to shatter, lol, go for it.

Seriously... a few full stops would make your posts more comprehensible. I'm not trying to be funny here, I'm actually very serious. People aren't just nit picking, most of your posts makes no sens.

Camiel: You better post some nice Vids when your done :thumbsup:

@Kinnear - I must agree with Nic. This isnt english class, but some grammar management would make for an easier ride. No need to type it as it comes out of your mouth, or in your mind.

Personally I will only admit that diesel has caught up with petrol once you get NA diesel engines with performance that is comparable to NA petrol engines.

lol, you never will.. two different engine concepts.. turbo's are what made diesels mainstream. besides, better start getting used to diesels, only viable engine we currently have that has a renewable fuelsource.. :)

we cannot grow enough to supply the current demand for fuel and 90% if fuel that is grown is heavily subsidised to make it viable... we need to convert i 3rd of the worlds farm land if we want to grow our fuel, this means we need to make another 3rd so we have food :)

environmentally friendly? they will sort out hydrogen before we grow our fuel...
