On the straight six diesel you just need to remove the cat's and replace with straight pieces of pipe and you will get better sound. The turbo whistle and dump sound (that I love on my car too) actually comes from the engine bay and not through the exhaust.

 @ Muney, sank and mor.

Kidears, please type your posts into word before you post them, and then fix them until there are no more green or red squiggly lines below the text. Only then you may proceed to post them. Until you learn the English language, I won't bother to try and decipher your posts.

I was actually very interested in the thread until everybody started dissing the oilers. I am deeply dissapointed in some forum members. We are on this forum for our mutual love of Beemers. Petrol cars are great, I drove them for a long time, but if you don't own one, you wouldn't understand. Dude, decat, maybe foolers and a freeflow should do the trick. I am also planning something similiar. Watch a couple of clips on youtube, you will be pleasantly surprised and convinced. We however DO know that the above-mentioned peanut gallery and unhelpful petrolheads cannot keep up when we ask them for a drag at the robots. DIESEL ON!!!

all the clips on you tube ive listened to the idle is still not vey nice... thats why im asking...

the sound is one of the main reasons i dont want a diesel the other is the smoke... if that disappoints you then its just too bad... i dont hate diesels i just cant live with one...

My diesel does not smoke a bit. Not ever. Sound does not bother me inside, but if you have a diesel, live with it as it is, if you want it to sound like a petrol, buy a petrol.

but a free flow with no filters on it will smoke like hell... unless i got something wrong...

so... ether you have the tractor noise or smoke :(

I have to agree with P1000 on this one, just leave it alone. There was a 120d race car at zwartkops today and even that doens' sound very nice, so it is better to just leave it as is.

I also thought that no matter what you do to a diesel, it will never sound nice......until a few weeks ago when I heard a polo 1.9tdi sportline with a exhaust note similar to that of a turbo petrol car like the gti's. So I'm sure a decat and maybe downpipe will give you a better sound, not to mention the power increase.

a diesel smoking has nothing to do with its exhaust system, e46 diesels did not even have particulate filters installed. excess unburnt diesel causes the black smoke, thus remapped cars tend to smoke more than stock..

I'm not saying this because I have a diesel only, but I do in fact like the sound of mine - the straight six 3 litre. At idle, from the inside, its fine and from the outside it doesnt give off the typical diesel bakkie sound. However, the four cylinder 320d's do.

Putting on a performance exhaust, like the Eisenmann for example make it sound incredible.

I dont know the cost though, i have requested costing on the Eisanmann. I'm sure at some stage I'll get a reply.

To all you petrol head snobs, ease up.

Well I have to say I was under the impression that the bigger diesels sounded better but all the diesels sound pretty much the same this can also be said even for the newer 35d engines, idling at the light they klak-klak-klak, just like a normal diesel and also at pull-away for about half a second and then it is just the tsssssssssss sound of boost. Even the V10 tdi touregs sound like this and that is a 5l engine.

Just to get this straight, I am not hating or some crap on your diesels I am just stating the facts, if you have a diesel you get the torque and the economy, it is not going to sound nice so live with it. We petrol engine driver, get the sound track, but don't get that kind of torque or economy so we have to live with that, and I am.

I will not go into my opinions about diesels as that will definitely be hating.

Thanks Guys for the feed back!!! some heated debates but all in the love of our beamers.... and the passion we have...going for a decat and gettin rid of the downpipes my diesel has minimal smoke.... the reason why I wanted to get some exhaust note was.... wait for it....... my gf had a 120i convertible and recently upgraded to hmmm the E92 M3 manual WTF!!!! carbon fibre roof and red interior.... so if i can just get a nice exhaust tone I am all good with the situation.

oh btw i dont mind the diesel engine noise I can live with that! but i love a nice exhaust tone aswell
