E46 330d M57D30 turbo issues

OK so I am very concerned about my turbo on the 330d. The turbo whistle has become a lot louder and a few minutes after starting it smokes heavily at idle for a few minutes as well as when on kickdown so I am convinced the oil seals and intercooler are in bad shape. Where do I find the vortex version of the oil separator, a hybrid turbo and a slightly uprated intercooler that fits without mods. I want to compare rebuilding the existing turbo and replacing the intercooler with a new stock one versus a hybrid turbo with custom intercooler.

I am also planning on doing the EGR delete and downpipe while I am at it depending on cost. I am prepared to source from JHB if not available in Cpt. Please guys. Engine code M57d30 135kw version

Can the car be driven in its present condition as I have parked it but it is a huge inconvenience with only one vehicle. There are no engine fault lights coming on and other than the whistle and smoke it drives normal.

Thanks

that whistle could be caused by a few times like a turbo that is out of balance cause of the damage or cause you have a boost leak on one of the pipes.

Are their any warning lights on the dash?
Have you scanned the car for any error codes?

How is the power currently?
Not very different but there is more lag.

No warning lights and I have not had it scanned.

I would start by checking for boost leaks. Make sure all the boost pipes are properly seated, also keep an eye out for oil sweat around the joints...

Those are OK but the entire bottom section of the intercooler is covered in oil which is then blown under the entire engine bay. I thought I had an oil leak but its definitely coming from the intercooler which is obviously losing some boost but its been like that since I got the vehicle last year May.

Could be the seals on the inside of the pipes that have perished or could also be that the intercooler itself is leaking.

The best bet there would be to remove the cooler and have it pressure tested for any leaks.

in terms of cost of replacing intercooler and going hybrid with custom cooler...

If you plan keeping the car, custom cooler, custom piping, semi hybrid turbo all the way.

Your options are Non-oem Behr cooler for around 2-3k( just like OEM, just no BMW sticker), all seal replaced and refurbish turbo for around 6-7k ( provided theres no major issues) should set you back around R9k if you remove and fit ( thumb suck)

Performance cooler or custom coolers can range anything from 2-6.5k, custom pipes around 2-3k with fittings etc and hybrid turbo around 8-10k if your one isnt stuffed.

9k - 10k vs 14k-19.5k if I had to do it over, i would not go stock

If you are looking at upgrading then look at aftermarket solutions... If not, I suggest removing the cooler and giving everything a good clean before checking for obvious damage. Check the seals around the boost pipes where they connect to the cooler. Might be a simple O ring or a pipe that isn't seated on the cooler properly.

Thanks Sash. This is what I was looking for. I did get a quote from Stallion up in JHB for the hybrid turbo which was 7800 ex Vat. Got referred to them by a serious boost addict who reckons he is finished with the local guys in CPT as the now retired Kallie is the only one he never had issues with.

Custom coolers are hard to source in Cpt and the lead time is long even when getting it up country. Can I run the hybrid turbo with a new stock cooler?

Will only know my budget at the end of the month. Will definitely go the hybrid route if the funds are there.

Thanks again

Definitely worth investigating thanks

What colour is the smoke?
White / light grey so it's oil. Everything I have replaced thus far has been the original part from 2002. I would not be surprised if the turbo is the original one the car rolled off the showroom with so the oil seals on the turbo must be as hard as steel by now. At least that is what I suspect.

Also can someone please tell me if our local M57D30 engine comes with 22mm or 33mm swirl flaps? Want to check that as well when doing the turbo. Also what does Powerflow charge for a downpipe for this engine?

Anyone here who did a swirl flap removal on a E46 330d? Is it available locally and are the flaps 22mm or 33mm? Thanks

You can, but you will encounter heatsoak sooner when driving hard for extended periods of time.

Current sound the turbo making since a week ago. Cleaned the EGR valve and it smokes a lot less but the question is can I drive it like that till the end of the month?//cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5c86cff396fc1/VID_20190311_230722.mp4

whining Noises on the turbo are hard to put a time frame to, my turbo had a similar whine for over 80 000km until it went bang. I have read of others whose turbo after a couple thousand of kms.

My suggestion is to minimise additional damage, if i had done my turbo while it was still running, i would have saved myself about 10k.
