E46 330d Engine overhaul or replacement

Hi guys,

I need your advice from anyone who might have had an experience on this.
I have a beautiful late 2003 e46 330d (auto) that had an engine knock. This was caused by the engine burning oil and by the time i realised this it had already knocked.:smashScreen: Before all this the car drove well and am not considering selling it.

The issue i have is i am not sure whether to rebuild the engine or to replace it. The car has an M57N engine which is the revised version of the M57. Around this dilemma, i need to find out the following;

1. If i replace the engine, can i use the motor from a 330d e90 (preface lift) or i should stick to the e46 one?
2. Which spares dealerships should i first check out with that sell good motors (with guarantees)
3. How much will it cost on average for the motor and the labour?
4. How much will it cost on average to rebuild?
5. Are there any good independent mechanics you can refer me to so that they can work on it. (Please dont refer my to dodgy mechanics who will start off by showing me scratches on the fenders and how expensive BMWs are.):cartel::cartel: I am based in the East Rand.

Your advise will be greatly appreciated

Thanks buddy. Let me google them out

For good motors with warranty see Bavarian Auto Recycling. They import low mileage BMW engines from Asia.

I got my M3 cylinder head from them and have had no issues for 4 years.

I forgot to ask...
Since the motors are from Asia, wont i have to replace a few things that are maybe built for different whether conditions before i use the motor. This considering the Asia is generally cooler than down here, just wondering :idea::idea::idea::YesNo::YesNo::YesNo::YesNo::YesNo:

You're only changing the engine, not the cooling, so your original cooling system plumbing will work. But to have peace of mind, have a word with the sales guys.
