E46 330d boost problem

My 2003 330d (122,000km) has bit a boost issue.
The other day I noticed there was power was only coming in at 2250rpm, 2 days later Im only getting boost at 3000rpm. This morning Im getting power around 2750rpm.
I had a look at a few forums in the UK but it can be quite a few things.

Few guys are talking about butterfly valves (orsomething) sticking but my car is a 2003 330d with the M57 engine, this has the new upgraded head that does not have this problem.

So this weekend I cleaned the EGR valve and disconnected the vacuum pump, this did not fix the problem but my car was smoking less after I did this( not using exhaust gases after removing vacuum pipe) and when the power came (3000rpm) it really pulled like a train!
I also disconencted the MAF to see if it would solve it but it didnt. On most forums they say its a faulty MAF and and some say you cannot see if its faulty by disconnecting (did not make adifference in my case). I did give the resistor on the MAF a clean with some elextrical contact cleaner.

Most people say its the crankcase breather? Now what is that and where is it? can some1 find it on here and point it out. www.bmwfans.info

One guys said it could be a boost control solenoid or something. I dought its a faulty Injector or a problem with the turbo because I am getting full boost just at higher rpm.

Before I take my car in, I wanto see if any1 has had this problem or if you have any ideas.
When I take it in where should I take it? The Stealership, Steves auto clinic or some other guys? I wanto take it somewhere where they know what the problem is, not replace half the engine to solve it.

Does not really address your problem, but I recently took my X5 to TuneTech to clean out one of the injectors and replace a glow plug, as the car felt very rough below 2000RPM, but was fine above that. I would recommend them for work on the diesel engines as well. Car pulled like a train afterwards and was smooth as a petrol.... well maybe not as smooth as a BMW 6 cylinder petrol .... but this diesel engine now runs as smooth as a Merc petrol engine :)

I did have a good look for boost leaks, I will have another look though. I think it might be the intake from the intercooler. Im just not keen to wait untill the weekend so I can have a look, I hink i might take it to the stealership this week.

I had the exact same problem on my E46 320d. Boost would come in at different RPM's every day. Sometimes it was fine, other times I only had power above 3000rpm. I took the car to BMW, they replaced the EGR valve and all was well. Are you sure your EGR valve is not sticking, even after you cleaned it?

Think im going to book it in the stealership to have it checked. Can any1 here recommend a place that has full diagnostics to check injectors?

Got mt car back from the stealership today. Problem solved and its pulling like never before.

They changed the Vacuum Expansion Tank and 3 Vacuum Hoses

Ye thx, also glad it wasn't anything more serious. Do you know anyhing about changing the crankcase breather? Guys on international forums are all saying its a must change.

Hi guys,

I have an e46 330d (2001 though) as well. I also find that the car feels a quite sluggish below 2250rpm and then suddenly something seems to free up and the car quietens down and pulls nicely. Then above 3500rpm it feels sluggish and a bit rough again.

It also sometimes makes a loud hissing/sucking noise for a while when you put your foot down sometimes before freeing up and running nicely again. Any ideas? could this be the same issue?

I have cleaned the turbo actuator and made sure the movement is good, it helped somewhat but still having some issues... looking for good advice on what to look at next! Fuel economy is poor as well... at best i get around 12L/100km.

that is quite heavy. My first suggestion would be to check for leaks, i would then suggest a diagnostic.

I would also recommend you introduce yourself on the Intro Sub forum.

Thanks Sash!

Maybe tomorrow i will pop out the reservoir and pressure converter... probably change the vacuum pipes too. Hope it's not too much of a pain!
Any idea what size pipes need? so i can buy everything before stripping the car.

I think all the vacuum lines are 5mm inside diameter. I used fuel hose (from midas) as it's reinforced and nice and thick. So it doesn't collapse under heat and vacuum load.

Thanks andy! Im going to get the hoses today. I actually took off the intake and cleaned it ob saturday. Was filthy as expected. Any tips on the easiest way to get the pressure converter/hoses off for replacement? Would it be easier to go in from the top or bottom?

From the top, after removing the intake manifold just follow the vacuum lines. There are 4 in total each with different colour coded lines. The 4 meet in the vacuum manifold and you can essentially block off all of them at the manifold and remove all the pressure reducer/converters as well. Just leave the one vacuum line in place for the turbo of course :)
