I couldn't say for certain - without knowing its history, you're taking a gamble. You don't know if someone has been using it as a towcar for the last ten years, or worse.

Yeah you making sense. Do you know the gearbox oil service internal of the e46?

Most auto gearboxes would never have been serviced during the life of the vehicle, certainly not while it was being maintained by BMW.

Yes but we all know that is not true

You'd best cross-check who else uses that gearbox, and what they recommend. Very often a transmission might be used by another manufacturer who does Institute an oil change as part of the maintenance procedure.

The problem with these shit autoboxes is as Budleigh mentioned, they are operating over there limits, especially here at the reef where your turbo has a bit of overboost.

My autobox never gave any indication that it was about to fail, it was fine and then i tried to pull off in traffic and the rev counter just went up and the car didn't move. It was a fantastic feeling, Especially since I was 700km from my house...

My car got towed to BMW and they came back with a 75k quote to put a new autobox in as they said they don't repair them they just replace them.

If your worried about this box its probably your gut trying to warn you lol.

R75k for a box and 700km from you crib. Are you f*&%@%$$% kidding me? Wow!!!!!! Am sure you hated your car from that point on. Is that when you decided to get Yamaha?

Go to Budler Motorsport and get the oil and filter changed they also specialists in this specific GM Gearbox. Appart from the one or two people who experienced issues you will find this gearbox on both the E46 330d facelift / pre facelift as well as the E39 530d running with mild mods and well over 250 000km some even 300 000km plus with no issues. Ultimately it comes down to the driver and maintenance of the box.

Had Slushbox E36
Box Failed @ 110 000km, Maintained all it's life at a BMW Dealer
Did Manual Swap
Saved Zero money :bin:

If I were to do it all over again, I would have junked the car and purchased another in the spec that I wanted it in.

I know atleast one E46 330D owner who had an Autobox fail, cost him +-30k to have it refurbished at Triangle Transmissions. They do fail, and give little to no warning before they do.

As long as they dont aim a H-Bomb on my wallet, Yeah why not. I will pay them a visit. Too bad i dont have any record of the maintance coz i got the car second hand. Also i had had no issues with my previous cars, i never paid attention to the box filter. I will see how the car will perform when it comes out of the workshop this week.

The oil is the most expensive part, if i recall the filter, oil and labour came to like R4k in total, I have the invoice somewhere, will recheck and confirm.
