Ok so I have a 330d A/T and the torque converter is starting to slip....still very drivable but it it slipping and only taking fully at about 2600rpm.

I have the GM box in mine...my question is can I replace it with the stronger 2005 box or do I have to have the GM box.

Also will I need to reprogram the car if I swop the box out with another one?

Otherwise I might just put her up for sale as is and see what gives.

A recon will be about R18 000 but I think that is way too much...maybe buying a second hand box and selling the car or letting her go at a lower price as is.

your thoughts?

There is no way you will be able to put a different auto box in that car, unless you have a lot of money to spend on electronics. R18k is a cheap rebuild for that box, who gave you that quote? Have you had someone look at the box? It might only be low on fluid. Either way, don't drive it like that. Apart from doing a lot of damage, those boxes are known to let go without warning, leaving you stranded, and it seems like yours is giving you a warning. If you are going to keep the car, I suggest sparklight gearboxes, have heard many with good experiences from them. A rebuild there would be R18500 ex vat.

What is you mileage?

Good luck.

only problem is that I am in the Eastern Cape and nowhere near sparklight and don't wanna drive the car that far.... I am considering letting her go for less as is ....maybe R75000 just to get something back and get her off my hands quickly...then maybe a manual or a touring :)

well trade is 89 and retail 116.

and remember I am in the eastern cape and cars sell for their retail here ...not like in JHB , CPT or DBN.

I really think I can get at least 75.

i would sell it asap, especially if you could actually get 75k for it.. i know of at least 2 cases with 330d auto's spesifically that gave endless trouble once the boxes went wonkey..

I would do a manual swap on it. If you were in gauteng, I might make you an offer, but it would not be 75k... I agree, if you can get that much, go for it, or repair it and get R116k... Problem with a used box is, they are difficult to find and most likely near the end of its life as well...
