At the same time, don't allow a good opportunity to pass you by. Maybe you would not mind a 330ci in auto, certainly a great deal to enjoy even in auto, I know this as I owned a 330i in auto and it was great, and not slow or boring by any stretch.

Biggest challenge probably is to find a E46 6pod that can match the condition of the 330ci.

Drive it, listen carefully, maybe it talks to you, then you'll know.

A 330ci with automatic...let me tell you, apart from the fact that the auto box will need an expensive overhaul at some point, it drives amazing for it's age. I have both a 330i with auto and manual gearbox. When you get to my age, the auto actually is loads faster when you just kick it down. But driving normally it does feel like an old persons car, nice and lazy :p

Personally, I wonder. The E30s is getting more scarce by the day in good condition. You can get a E46 330 auto any day, there plenty in all kinds of conditions. As for replacing interior color, it gets expensive real fast.

Lastly, don't look at a car and see some faults and overlook it. If the cosmetics are not as good as you want it, personally opinion, don't take it on as something you want to fix. It's more expensive than you think, unless you can do it yourself. Best choice you can make when buying, is looking at a car that is well kept in the best cosmetic condition you can find regardless of mileage. Mileage doesn't mean anything if there is a lot of work needed on the car. High mileage good to great comestic condition properly maintained wins in my books over low mileage car needing a lot of work.

if you don't purchase the e30 325i coupe ...good luck finding one for decent money in a few years time...also...even with low mileage be prepared to spend some money on the E46 ...besides the full spray job you speak of.

What I fear most is really expensive maintenance down the line, as you guys have mentioned about the auto box on the E46 going bad. It will need bodywork which isn’t cheap.

Doubt that prices on auto 330Ci’s will drastically rise like E30s over the years.

Are there any major issues to look out for on E30s? Besides rust, the timing belt, or oil leaks?

If you can get your hands on a 325ci mtech II go for it. One of the most fun cars to drive.

Handles better than 330ci
Not prone to theft like E30

I used my E30 as a daily for about 2 years and it didn’t give me any problems. However, it wasn’t my only car.
The issue is finding the right parts which can be difficult depending on what you looking for. It also pulls a lot of attention and I try not to drive at night because well… you never know. I am also extra careful who is around me and whether I’m being followed. In the 3 years I’ve owned mine, I have never had an issue (touch wood).

Username = Zinnober325i, looks like you have already decided on which car you want, so guess you are here for reassurance?

Anyway, if your budget is R90k...a better bet in my option would be a manual 6 pot e46 sedan...that budget could potentially get you a decent 330i ...again...just my opinion

I’m in Cape Town if that helps the decision at all. Cape Winelands area
Go for a 330i you won't be disappointed. Keep it simple I'd suggest find a clean 330i sedan even if it has a 5 or 6 speed as long as it's manual. Make sure it's M sport (if you care about that sort of thing) and just maintenance it. I got a 330i myself and it's a dream car of mine you will not regret it. But maybe try drive both cars before you make your decision

Just to throw a spanner in the works, look out for an E90 330i, in manual, can pick these up from 80k and man, go and drive one, only downside for me on these are the fuel bill, the rest, wolf in sheep clothing, this car has super performance, loads of fun, solid drive. Currently owning two cars with the same N52B30 power plants and they just keep going. The one has 217XXX km with full agent history, owned for seven years, the other on 208XXX km first 100k at agents, up to 190XXX at bosch and since i have owned it back at agents.
