Hey man, also check the Vanos system. I had a similar consumption issue, also on an '04 320i auto individual. Consumption became insane, loss of power, erratic power delivery which led to erratic gear changing.

Replaced the Vanos and she was back to normal.

Hi
Been a while...so it turned out to be gearbox-related, apparently the coolant pump packed-up (oily reside in radiator due to water-cooled system).
Had the S A Auto guys in Durbs attend, and a painful R20k later in stripping, replacing torque converter pump etc, got the car back.

So anyways...its not hundreds, but better than it was...I just had 180k service done at Glaziertech, where radiator, water bottle and service was done..
..so the best in the business (in KZN) has worked on the car...

Now im getting a squeaky, rumbling sort of noise like a rat is caught in a tumble-dryer...any advice?

Hi just an update, so the belt tenzioners needed replacement...sorted the squeek...
The inspection saw oil leaking from sump, and a mounting had broke..got to the source and replaced...much smoother and responsive...

Pity that age has costly implications....

Fuel tank issues...
Had quarter reading on the guage but was left at the roadside with no gas...
Seems to be an issue on some of these models.
apparently the tank has to sides that work in a circular return motion. Sometimes the left tank reads fuel due to blockage or pump error, but doesn't move over to the other side to get jetted into the engine.

Some tweaks and "making a plan" and this was resolved, but to put right, its recommended that pumps (comes in a set of 2) be replaced at approx. R15k...

..so the car has been to Pro Cars in Durban and a few tweaks here and there and all is good...

So much so that we added an e46 330i to the family cos you just cant beat those curves on an e46...

A few of the items / problems you wrote about is similar to what I experienced with my previous E46 320i auto individual although still in the family with my brother. They are still very good cars to have. Would you mind sharing what the tweaks were that Pro Car did?
