hi there guys, I also own a E46 320 d, its got 203000 kms on the clock, its a 2001 face lift moddel! I also have the same problem on my car. It started at first making a whisling noise, now its loosing power but only no and then. The weird thing is its not constant and the turbo still spools up! Its as if the boost leaks out some wear! I checked the boost pipe, but could not see nor feel anything! Could it maybe be someting like a boost controle sensor or some thing or is it the turbo thats going? ''its not smoking"

what engine do you have? if its the first gen m47 with distributer pump (not common rail) it might be the pump's advance function thats sticking.. a well know problem with the vp44 pump. could also be the lift pump in the tank.

it might be boost controller or vacuum pipes, you need to test and see. hook a boostgauge up to the inlet, if you have a loss of power while the turbo is showing steady boost on the gauge, you need to have your pump serviced asap before it seizes..

have a read here for a bit more info on vp44 failures..

Hi there. Since my first enquiry about my E46 320d turbo problems, I have fielded quite a few calls about it. I managed to find a "guru" for all things BMW on the older side of 5 years ie. used and out of motorplan. He has since maintained our car thru' many other "ageing" problems, and always given us fair, realistic and sound advice - and a pretty good deal. He has all the diagnostic needed for Beemers and all the experience of an ex-agent "soloist". Can't recommend him more highly.

hi guys,

New here. I have a pre-face lift 320d - bought at 148k km - done now 350k km without any major hiccups. Replaced the w/pump about 150k km ago. My problem is that I lose the turbo at 2400rpm. This happens irregular and most times it helps to gear down and floor the pedal. I really don't think it's the turbo - more turbo control. Any ideas?

Hi Kruger. That sounds like a vacuum problem. I had the same power loss at exactly 3000rpm in every gear. See if you can swop out all the vacuum hoses. It sorted my problem.

Get diesel hoses. Much cheaper too.
