E46 320d cooling issue

Hi all,

Have an issue and wanted to see if anyone has had similar. Was driving yesterday and the coolant light came on and went off again after a few minutes. This happened a few times. Decided to check water this morning and when I opened the radiator cap it literally flew off. Engine was stone cold. Is it normal to have that much pressure in radiator and what could cause this? Also water level was low.

Will appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Cooling systems are a weak point for the E46

pressure might be created by air in the system.....(wit the lack of water\coolant)

the best way would be to fist check for any leaks of coolant(pipes, water pump etc...), then bleed the system which will remove the air that is causing pressure.....

Watch your temp gauge, these cars blow heads easily

Check the bottom of the expansion tank. Not easy to spot the leak. They crack and leak slowly and then it gets worse over time.

The whole expansion tank is not too expensive to replace either.

Hope you sort it soon

So I have checked complete system and couldn't find any leaks. Bled the system also then took car for a drive long drive yesterday.

Checked the system today and the water level is fine but the cap basically popped off when I opened it so it seems the system is pressurizing excessively. I noticed there is some small black specs in the water. Oil however is clean and no water contamination.

I'm now thinking maybe the EGR cooler is letting gas into the cooling system? Is the a possibility?
