Hey Guys.

The clutch on my 320d has started to shudder quite badly on pull off.

The timing is really bad at the moment and I am non going to be able to have the clutch changed for about 3 - 4 weeks.

Can I cause any damage by driving it like this for a little while? Will it mess up the fly wheel............or is it already too late?

Can the fly wheel be skimmed on this car?

What is the average going price for a clutch kit on this model and where is the best place to get one, its a F/L E46 320d.

Sorry bud you cant skim its a dual mass ...........and driving it like that is going to cause additional drivetrain strain........which will ulimately cause other future damage......grearbox, propshaft and diff bush which I belive is a weak item already........

looking at a standard kit is around R1.2 - 1.5 K for Luk Sachs

Dual mass flywheel is around 3.5K ............

Please have it checked out as it could be another problem like the crankshaft dampner.

Whats your mileage on the vehicle?

160000kms. The crankshaft dampener pulley was done last month.

It is definitely the clutch, ive driven enough cars over the years to know when the clutch plate is poked. It shudders as the clutch is engaging and stops as soon as the clutch makes full contact.

Is it likely to have stuffed the flywheel already or will that still be ok?

I suspect the fly wheel may be giving in, the car has been feeling slightly rougher than normal recently.

Ok Im hitting 158 K on mine its a 2004 model.......what was the symptons for the changing of the dampener.......

The issue with our cars is the the self adjusting clutch. So the grab point is maintained about the same position all the time. Deviates from the norm of as it takes lower and lower to the full engagement. We can gauge accurately how much more we have and have it replaced.

From what you described it seems the Flywheel will need to be changed as when you do the clutch with the excessive shudder its going to cause some problems with it. Now having installed a new clutch with a cooked flywheel. Its going to wear out the clucch faster then normal

What ever you do ........dont ride the clutch I had a very bad experience of burning it out in stop and go traffic on an incline.

Best use the brakes and dont even rest your foot on it....

My car threw the aircon belt on a long trip and when I popped the bonnet to see why it had happened I spotted the crank pulley wobbling.

The pulley eventually removed itself from the crank and the car was still running , i drove it for about a week with no pulley before it was changed.

I was just lucky it didnt explode like they have a habit of doing and that i was able to get home with the car.

Yes my mate has a 2001 and it just lost power and started getting very rough so his wife pulled over. Called the mech to have a look he reckons lucky she did that as the thing came apart while she pulled over.

Problem is thise things are the very reason the ebgine does not vibrate itself apart.......

Is your unit stock or do you have mods running. The reason Im asking I have mine running software 147 KW & 390 NM on the Fly. When I had it done you could smell the clucth when you pulling it in the 4 - 4.5k RPM. That happened esp when using 50ppm fuel. Now it does not do that anymore could that be due to the clutch settling in.

When I do change it, goin to use the an upgraded unit - Valeo signiture series rated to hold 460NM. Then going to do the downpipe and take that stupid restriction on the pipe at the rear. It allows clearence for the cross brace tie or something to that effect. Install a dual 63mm staggered tailpiece and revise the software for the regen might look at upping it to 205 hp 420NM.
