e46 320d 100kw, power loss question

Hey, I bought a 2001 320d(prefacelift) about two weeks ago.
Is it normal for the car to seem to loose a little bit of power just after the turbo kicks in.
This normally happens @ about 2300rpm and the power increases after thet again, but does not aways happen if the engine is still cold.
At the start of boosting about 1800rpm everything seems fine.
The car has got 233000km on the clock and is on original turbo.
Thanks.

no, that is not normal. sat thinking about this for a while, the problem being that your model is the early one with the vp44 distributer pump, before common rail.

these pumps are not known for their bulletproofness, and often fail when their advance/retard function sticks or seizes. thus i think it might be bad news (i sincerely hope not though) that your distributer pump might be on its way out..

or it might be leaking vacuum lines to the turbo actuator or a sticky VNT mechanism in the turbo.. dificult one.

Thanks for the reply.
I did some more searching and I think it could also be the mass airflow meter.
Does anyone know anything about the maf in the 320d's failing

I had the vacuum problem, so it's worth checking out (read replacing) all the vacuum lines. The vacuum pressure converter was at fault. R1500 odd from BMW (or use a scrappy one)

Yes, it could also be the MAF. First unplug it and if the car runs better, it is the problem. Then you can try to give it a good clean with carb cleaner. Then start searching for a replacement... (landrover TD4 uses the same part)

Thanks for the replies.
I did unplug the MAF and then the performance were worst, the turbo only seemed to kick in at 2500rpm.
Should the whole MAF be cleaned with card cleaner or only the sensor plug?
Thanks

The maf itself, but if performance is worse, rather leave it. Your problem is the vacuum line or vacuum converter or turbo itself.

Black smoke is unburned diesel.

Therefore I think it is your glow plugs that needs replacing

As far as I am aware, glow plugs are only needed in much colder climates to help with the car turning over.. No real need for them to be replaced in SA.

you can disconnect glow plugs completely and a diesel will still run in our climate.
