e46 318i steering knock

Good day Gents
If you have advice....?
My car has a steering problem. The steering wheel shakes and a knocking sound can be heard when i drive over uneven road surfaces / corregations / pothole etc. If this happens on cornering it feels like you are loosing control. If the road surface is smooth, there is no problem to be picked up, even at high speeds. I know the wheel alighnment is fine and the shocks is fine.
My mechanic replaced the steering joint / universal joint as he says upon inspection it have some play, but it has not sorted the problem.
His next idea is the steering column is worn and should be the problem.
Please gents, has anyone got an idea what my problem typically is?

New steering joint/universal joint
recently replaced control arm bushes

control arm , tie rods , ball joints ? mabe i have the same issue , i have found quite a bit ofplay on the ball joints

I am having the same problem with my 2000 318i 143000Km's..
