E46 318i Coolant leak. Help please!

Good morning everyone.

My wife has a 2004 318i and ever since we got the car it has been using a little bit of water but I could never see where it was coming from.. I serviced the car this weekend and all of a sudden it started leaking much more to the point where I could see where it is coming from.

So I went onto Realoem and looked at the cooling system. Funny thing is, where it is leaking from I do not see any seal/gasket??

I have attached the picture, so the yellow highlight is where it is leaking from. Not sure if it can be tightened or if there is not supposed to be coming liquid from there at all. Maybe it is the water pump itself? I need to fix it this weekend so any help would be greatly appreciated, so whatever I need to get from BMW I can order in time.

The water pumps do tend to give up on the e46.

Best to replace.


Bmw built the car with a water pump including a plastic impellar. Best to replace with an aftermarket part that has a metal impellar. Goldwagen would be a good place to start.

Definitely water pump had the same symptoms on my car bought one from Masterparts still running after 20 000km's.
