E46 318i ABS / ASC brake pump/module faulty

Hi Guys

I have a few questions. My cars a 2002 E46 318i Auto

So today something odd happened , While sitting in stop and go traffic and while stationary, I hear a beep , the ASC , ABS , and brake light came on . I stopped , switched the car off and back on , the lights were gone , but a few moments later it came back on . Now its on permanently .

I scanned the car with INPA and it states 5DF5 Internal fault . Which is the pump module. .
It does not mention any sensor faults or anything else , only that one fault code.

I ran the tests on INPA, sometimes the pump works ( I can hear it) ( when it does the lights go away ) and sometimes it does not ( the lights stay on and I dont hear it run) At the moment the light is staying on.

Am I correct to guess that the pump module (Specifically the pump ) is faulty?

Can a buy a second hand unit , fit it and re-code it?

Do I have to purchase a module with the exact same part number that's on my car or would any E46 ASC module from any year work?

Can newer car modules be coded to work with my car?

Is there a way for me to test the second hand pump without fitting it to the car , can I unplug my pump and just attach the cable to the second hand pump and scan for codes to see if it gives me the internal pump code?

A new unit cost well over 38k so I have to go the second hand route for this item . Unless there is a way to fix it?

Thanks guys for all the help .
The car seems to drive normally , the brakes work , but I can feel that the ABS and ASC do not work .

Thanks guys for all your assistance!

Thanks so much jaizeejai , very interesting article really appreciate your reply! :)

Im going to try and find a replacement unit , BMW wants over 35k for the part , :dunnoanymore:. Apparently other vehicle brands came with the same parts as well so it gives me many options .

Hi guys!

So an update , since my last post , in December , the lights kind of mysteriously went away . January was fine , and up until last week , everything was good until one day , I hear the Beeps and the three lights on the dash went back on , the lights never go off and the car always beeps once as I drive off . I did a scan again and it showed 5DF5 Internal fault .

Anyway , Fast forward to yesterday , I took a drive to one the local yards around here and found what looks to be a good module , from a rolled over car, The serial and part number matches whats on my car so Im hoping that it would not cause a problem . Its identical to the unit on my car .

Now im not sure what to do .. Before I disconnect the one on my car and fit this , is there a way for me to test it? Possibly by plugging it into my cars harness and accessing it through INPA ?

It seems fairly simply to replace , although I have read that I would have to code it to my cars VIN number in order for it to work. ( Have no idea how to do that ) and im not sure If I would need to bleed the system .

Im also not sure if I would have to calibrate a steering angle sensor as im not sure if my car has that as its not DSC , but ASC.

Another strange problem is , on my INPA , when ever I click asc/dsc , the system gives me an error , If i chose DSC MK60 , it tells me there's a mismatch , but then allows me to run an error check as well as bleeding , calibrating etc . ( not sure whats up with that as my car clearly has ASC .)

Im sort of in a box here , Im not sure what to do or what direction I should take . Thanks guys for all your advice . I would really love to have my ABS back lol

EDIT :

I just read on this site

http://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=710077

Final update: problem was with the ASC unit. I sent it to module master and they sent it back claiming it was fixed. Put it in the car and same issue. Then bought a unit from a junk yard for $150 which fixed the issue (should have just done this from the beginning). No coding necessary for the asc unit, its just plug and play.

Is this true? Theres no coding needed on my ASC Unit?

Hi Evnmopwr

Yup , it was all sorted out , Bought the one from a scrap yard , it came off a car that they had bought to strip due to a faulty gearbox , very sad though as the car was an Msport , black and in mint condition .

You have to make sure that the model number that's on your car exactly matches that of the one you are buying . ( this is what I was told )

I installed it myself , it was very easy , when installed , the lights would not turn off , So I booked the car in to BMW Smg to have the brake fluid flush done , and they coded the new unit to my car , and the lights went away .

Haven't had an issue with it since .

Was just checking before i shell out more money And then it did not work
