I would like to convert my E39's headlights to Xenon. Where can I get that done in Johannesburg? Is there anyone who think it is a bad idea? It is a 540i manufactured in 2000/11.

Does it have projector lenses? If it does then you can just get a HID kit. If it does not have projector lenses then you will need to find a xenon set from a e39 that had xenons

This is what the projector headlights look like:

The projectors are the glass lenses on the dim lights. It is much better to have projectors when upgrading to xenons, as xenons tend to blind other motorists when you have them with normal reflector headlights.

The later model e39's came out with the projector headlights, but not exactly sure for which year, maybe someone with more knowledge of 5'ers can help.

the halogen projector lenses and the xenon projector lenses are different ..
you will have to get the base/lens from a xenon headlight set... and fit them into yout halogen headlights...
an upgrade is pretty expensive, about 10K for a set of original hella xenon headlights ...

Isn't it possible to to just fit a HID kit to the halogen projectors?
(I've done this before and it worked fine, was on a corsa though)

But my knowledge is a bit limited in terms of the 5er's, I didn't even know you could get OEM xenons for the e39.

@rabdos: what bulbs does your car take, as I have a H1 (I think) HID kit here at home.

Then the HID kit I have will unfortunately be of no use to you.

Seeing as you have projectors getting an H7 HID should be all you'll need to do for you xenon conversion, and possibly capacitors to cancel the bulb out errors.
