I found the e34 pdf bentley manual, just do a torrent search, normally turns up quite a few results.

go to google - type in "torrent search engines"
select one - then type "Bentley BMW 5 series service manuel 1997 - 2003"
from the answers ignore the sponsored links as they require a credit card and $$
go down till you find "E39 service manual" and download it
its a .rar file which when you open will be in a pdf 1002 pages

The Bentley is recommended to be better than the Haynes for the E39

Just watch it though, bentley gets it wrong too. Such as the amount of bolts holding the Torque conv. onto the flywheel in a E34... that almost ended in tears.. or oil.
