E39 Rough Idle

Hi Guys.

I hope you can help.

My dads E39 323i auto developed a rough idle some time back. I felt like it was going to die on pull off and standing and only after about 2000rpm did she pick up and move.

We had the car diagnosed and it was the coil on cylinder three that was triggering a fault. We replaced the coil and the fault cleared for about two weeks.

it then came back with the same error on cyl 3 again. We got a new coil again just in case it was a coincidence that it had packed up again.

It is now starting the same thing again. We haven't had it diagnosed yet to see which cylinder it is on this time but it is doing exactly the same thing.

What could cause it to blow three coils? The two new ones came from Goldwagen and they are not going to replace it under warranty.

Could it be a dud batch of coils or could there be something else on the car that could be doing it?

first I assume you meant e39 523

Who say it is the coil?

With diagnostics swap coil packs and see if problem move with coil. if not coil is fine

check plugs. maybe swap cyl 3 plugs with one of the other plugs. and see if problem moves.

Not sure what the quility of the coil of goldwagen is. What is the brand?

Oh sorry yes, 523.

When we did a diagnostics on the car it gave an error on cylinder three. We then reset the error codes and moved the coil from cylinder three to cylinder two. The same error then showed up on cylinder two. So it must be the coil.

The coil from Goldwagen is the same make and model as the original that we replaced it with.

The spark plugs were changed before the coil was changed and the problem persisted. We are using the high heat bosch plugs from the agents.

I would try Bosch coils ... might be an issue with the ones from GW ???

Could very well be a fake coil...

Last time I got coils from GW they were Bosch (that and valeo). (this is for my 330i of course)

Is the plug hole dry? No oil in it?

when you change the coil again put the new one in another cyl and the an old one in cyl 3... this way if the coil in cyl 3 goes you know it not faulty new coils and you need to find something else...

not really helpful because it means you may still have to buy a few more coils
