e39 M5 Recommended Oil

Hi Guys,

its time for an oil change on the M5 - its a 2001 model (manufacturing date was 10/2000) so I guess it probably has the redesigned rings.

I have researched the debates around TWS 10W60 vs. BMW LL04 5W30 and the consensus is that the oil ring design is not the overriding factor. It seems that the thinner oil offers better protection under normal driving conditions whereas the TWS will offer ultimate protection for track days and other events where the engine will be working hard and hot for extended periods.

I am certain that the lower viscosity will be better for cold starts in colder climates but the TWS will be the choice for hot weather operation where oil temps can climb.

I have thus decided to change the oil in spring for the 5W30 and again in autumn for the TWS spec.

I am planning on using the Liqui-Moly lubricants - does anybody know offhand the applicable products?

I am also going to fit the later type VANOS accumulator since my car is pre-wired and I do get the occasional VANOS rattle on hot starts (goes away within 5 seconds)

I have also ordered new 02 regulating sensors and new Bosch MAF sensors.

Front suspension overhaul and she should be good to 300,000 kms. (252,000 at the moment)

Also looking at a decent performance exhaust (I would like a deeper growl but I don't want any drone) and I am fussy so I like mandrel bends and neat welds preferably polished - can anybody recommend a good exhaust shop?

Cheers

Andrew.... I opt for the 10w60 Liqui Moly in my M5, the gt1 Racetech with ceratec, working well for me, if you are interested in using the TWS professional I have about 7 litres that customer bought from BMW and did not use.....
