Guys and Gals

I know it has been a long time since I have been here, but had something important to share :

This is in connection with the current oil the dealers sell for the M model cars, what I recommend is to stay away, I recently had my car serviced and used the new oil from BMW. I thought my cars engine was on it's way out, as it started smoking under acceleration and where previously, it never used oil, it was now using close to 400ml per tank of fuel.

So I decided to change the oil and got Castrol Edge Professional 10W60, New filter, and Liqui Moli Engine flush.

We flushed the engine, put the new filter and oil in and am now on my second tank of fuel, and not a drop of topup oil needed and the car no longer is smocking.

So to those that might be experiencing the same kind of problem, I would suggest you change the oil as soon as possible. I know it is a bit of an expense, but I feel that although the oil BMW are selling might be good for the new models, it is definitely not good for our older model cars.

You chose Castrol over Shell? Why didn't you just stay with liqui moly? I wouldnt risk any of my cars with castrol oil.

S62 is known to drink oil.

Oil has a hundred properties, of which consumption is very low on the importance list.
Cooling and lubrication, anti rust etc is more important.

Your oil scraper ring is either stuck or worn out anyway, using a thicker oil does not fix old mechanicals.

Maybe do a oil analysis on the oil when you change it for some info as to how your oil is actually performing.

Good luck!

You guys are forgetting that Castrol TWS (10W60) was designed for the E39 M5 motor according to to BMW's specs at that time. Where Castrol Edge Professional 10W60 is supposed to have replaced the Castrol TWS. It is not htat I am going for a thicker oil, 10W60 is what must be used in the S62 motor.

BTW The Liqui Moly was only engine flush and not oil.

if I'm not mistake, Twin Power Silver is 5w30 Shell Ultra and Twin Power Gold/M is a 0w40 Shell Ultra.

Likely they used the 0w40

If you look at hundreds of oil analysis reports you will see there is little difference (if any) between big brand oils of the same spec. Seen quite a few tests on the BITOG forum where new Castrol Edge FST 5w40 performed exactly the same as Mobil 1 0w40 in the same engine.

On Liqui-Moly, its no better or worse than any of the big brand oils according to UOA tests. You simply paying more for an oil of equal performance.

Opinions are generally stronger than facts when it comes to oil but if you look at the tests you would be surprised how close every BMW LL01 approved oil is in performance. I've been reading analysis on oils on the BITOG forum for the last 10 years and the conclusion I have made is buy the approved oil from a know brand that your manual states that's the cheapest (or on sale)

Here are some discussions on the BITOG forum that might help you -

Also, it does seem like 0w40's don't perform well in these engines. The high iron levels in such a short OCI means its chowing bearings on this oil.
