E39 540i Starting Issue

Hello,

I sometimes (50% of the time) get this extra sound when starting the car. Anybody had a similar experience or has an idea what could be wrong?

Sounds like the starter to me.

I would say it is starter. bendix..

Do you get it more often after the car has warmed up, as opposed to first thing in the morning?

Mine did the same, but had a higher pitch clang.

A starter recondition fixed it.

@Jandre: At first, it was only when the car has warmed up but now, it's irregular, including when it's cold.
