E39 540i Service Costs

After a few phone calls, I managed to get some quotes for a major service on my E39 540, these prices includes the fuel filter with regulator (at BMW it is R1085 alone).

S & N Auto Centurion - R2400
FastServ Brooklyn - R3800
BMW Centurion R5500

I saw some good reviews about Sakkie's work at S & N, spoke to him and he sounds like a genuine guy.

I think the price is reasonable for a V8, any comments will be appreciated.

Sakkie and fastserv's prices will most likely then not be genuine parts...

I would just DIY it, a service is easy, and its less of a hassle to go to pick up the parts, than to leave a car there, get a lift back, and reverse the process when the job is done...

For my 540i I worked out that it should be less than R1000 if I DIY, although that's without using genuine parts. I still want to see what the difference is if I get the genuine parts.

Whilst I understand the dealers are too expensive, you will also most likely get what you pay for, don't go for the cheapest but maybe aim for the middle somwhere?

I serviced my E39 540i myself and theres no way I could gey away with replacing the required major service items for R2400 even doing it myself without labour costs, so I wonder what they will do?

Aftermarket filters on a BM is also just looking for trouble, I have photographs here of oil filters made by a major aftermarket supplier that are either too long or too short. last one I used was too long, it crushed when fitted, I then tripple checked I had bought the right one. It was definitly correct, just the wrong size I confirmed, so don't trust them.

Hell yeahs, nothing more satisfying that doing this work yourself, also it will give you a boost in confidence to tackle other more complicated things.
