E39 540i - Questions

Maybe try a few scrap yards and see if they have any E46 or E39 sportpack parts around? They might have a steering wheel for you...

Been a bit quiet on this one because with one thing and another, I still haven't had time to go and collect my 540i which is safely sitting in a garage in Cape Town.

However, a couple of things which I would be grateful for advice / comments on please guys;

1. Is it worth doing a free flow exhaust on this motor (pre-Vanos) and if so, should one couple that with a K&N (or similar) airfilter element?

2. Assuming the answer is "yes" to 1. above, who can do a decent free flow exhaust in Durban / Pietermaritzburg. I don't want something loud or that causes droning in the car at any speed. Just a setup that liberates a few extra kilowatts and makes the motor breathe nicely.

3. The car has only done 82 000km's in 18yrs (FSH at the dealer) so I wondered if it would be worth a visit to the Carbon Doctor?

4. Is it worth a fluid change / service on the gearbox at this mileage?

Looking forward to the feedback guys and thanks in advance.:ty::=):

Thanks Spawn. Do they do manifolds as well. Presume your BM is a turbo if you are just talking downpipes?

I know that this car has been decatted so far.

1. For sound - Absolutely!!! one of my favorite mods on my 540, was unleashing the V8 sound.
For power - No. It will make zip 0 difference. Same goes for the filter. Just fit a new one

2. There is a fine balance between a nice sound, and being loud. A good shop should be able to get you what you want. Dont expect any KW extra. In fact, the chances of loosing power is greater than the chances of gaining anything

3. Read up about the difference between Port Injection and Direct Injection.
e39 540 has the former. (Short answer is "No")

4. Yes

Thanks Fordkoppie. Yeah, ultimately, I'm not really after more power because I think that this car has enough of that anyway. Just be nice to hear a little more and I am thinking that to see the pipe / s outlet in the rear valance is nice too.

It's not the Sport model so any change to the outlet would require some subtle mods to the bottom of the rear valance of the bumper......but we'll see.:=):

Let me tell you. A road trip in an E39 is such a sublime experience :inlove:

Did around 4.5k km over the Christmas holidays with mine. Loved every single second of it! :praise:

Aaaah man! That there. Exactly THAT car right there is what sparked my love for the E39. I grew up in a 540i EXACTLY like this. Just wow :inlove:

Nor has he started a proper intro thread for it with at least 134 photos of the exterior and at least 78 photos of the interior...

That car looks so familiar. So so familiar...
